LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will compete at the 2019 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship this weekend at The Old White TPC at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The four-round tournament begins on Friday with 36 holes before one round on Saturday and the final 18 and awards ceremony on Sunday to conclude the 23rd annual event.
No. 10-ranked Texas Tech will be represented at this year's Big 12 Conference Championship by Sandy Scott, Ivan Ramirez, Kyle Hogan, Adam Blomme, Jansen Smith and Markus Braadlie. The Red Raiders, who are the fourth seed in the tournament, are coming off winning the El Macero Classic two weeks ago and enter the postseason having won two regular-season tournaments and six top-5 finishes this season. Tech is looking to win its first Big 12 Conference tournament title in program history.
The Old White TPC, which will play at par-70 and 7,292 yards this weekend, has been the host of A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, formerly The Greenbrier Classic, an annual PGA TOUR FedEx Cup Event since 2010.
Competition begins on Friday with No. 1 seed Oklahoma State and No. 2 Texas teeing off at 7 a.m., while the Red Raiders and No. 3 Oklahoma will begin at 7:45 a.m. followed by No. 9 West Virginia and No. 10 Kansas State at 8:30 a.m. Seeds one through four along with nine and 10 will tee off on the first hole. On the 10th tee, No. 5 Baylor and No. 6 TCU will tee off at 7:22 a.m., while No. 7 Kansas will play alongside No. 8 Iowa State beginning at 8:07 a.m.
"I think our preparation has been excellent and the hard work has been put in," Texas Tech coach Greg Sands said. "But we need to continue that because we know that the postseason is pretty long in the golf season."
Scott enters the postseason ranked No. 15 individually, is one of 15 players remaining on Haskins Award Watch List and was selected to the Arnold Palmer Cup International Team along with Ramirez. A junior from Scotland, Scott is coming off the first tournament win of his career where he shot 3-under-par to win the El Macero Classic. He also finished as the runner-up at the Lake Charles Invitational where he was at 13-under after carding 64-65-74 – 203 for his low-score of the season. A senior from Colombia, Ramirez shot 2-under and finished as the El Macero Classic runner-up and has four top-10 finishes this season. He had his best conference showing as a sophomore, finishing in sixth place at 14-over during the four-round championship that was played in Hutchinson, Kansas. Ramirez would card a 15-over last year and finished 30th as a junior after he had tied for 21st at 10-over as a freshman. A senior from Sweden, Blomme led Tech as last year's conference tournament by finishing 18th with a 72-73-73-72 – 290 (10-over). Blomme finished as the runner-up at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in mid-February where he shot 69-70-70 – 209 (7-under) for his best showing of the year. He has two top-10 finishes this season, including taking ninth at the Southern Highlands Collegiate after posting a three-round total of 3-under.
Scott comes into the conference tournament with a 70.2 scoring average and looks to improve upon a 34th place showing at last year's tournament.
"Sandy has put in a lot of hard work but the big thing is that he has been more patient with himself," Sands said. "He realizes that he's not going to get that much better skill wise, but he can still get a lot better with his mental game. That's something that has really helped him. His maturity level has really gone up and his ability to accept bad shots has helped his demeanor. Sometimes when you don't accept a shot it rolls into the next shot and the next shot so that's what he's gotten a lot better at. He stays in the present and the shot at hand and not letting a bad shot bother him too much. That growth has gotten him to the point where he's going to be in contention no matter what because his skill level has always been there."
Hogan will be playing in his second conference tournament after he shot 75-72-75-72 – 294 (14-over) during his first conference tournament last year as a freshman. He comes into this weekend's tournament in West Virginia after taking fourth at the Lake Charles Invitational after shooting 12-under and sixth at the El Macero at even-par. Hogan has three top-10 finishes in his sophomore season and a 71.7 scoring average. Braadlie and Smith will both be playing in their first conference tournament after a pair of strong freshman regular seasons. A San Angelo native, Smith is coming off a 29th-place showing at the El Macero which was his top showing in five tournaments this season. A first-year player from Norway, Braadlie has competed in four tournaments leading into the Big 12 tournament and finished 41st at the El Macero.Â
In the Golfstat rankings, Texas Tech is at No. 10 nationally coming into the conference tournament while Oklahoma State is No. 1, Texas is at No. 6 and Oklahoma is No. 7. Five Big 12 teams enter the Championship ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, led by No. 1-ranked Cowboys, No. 8 Longhorns, No. 9 Sooners, No. 19 Red Raiders and No. 22 Baylor. Teams will consist of five golfers and the lowest four scores per round from the designated five-player team will be used. Scoring shall be stroke play. Pairings for Day 2 will be based on the 36-hole team totals from Day 1, beginning with the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams. Day 3 will be based on the 54-hole team totals with the leaders teeing off last.
Texas Tech finished seventh at last year's tournament after shooting 295-289-294-293 – 1171, while Oklahoma won the conference title with a four-round total of 1139 at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Red Raiders have finished as runner-ups at the Big 12 Conference Championships in 2014 and 2015 for the top showings in program history. Â
"It's exciting to get to play at Tour-quality golf course that the PGA hosts an event at every year," Sands said. "Our guys are excited about it, but we don't know too much about the course right now. We've outlined it strategically and looked at some things through old footage and google maps, so we done some homework on it but in general we are excited about going to a new venue that is a place that has so much history."
The awards ceremony will follow Sunday's final round. The event is free and open to the public. Live scoring will be available on Big12Sports.com. Following the Big 12 Championship, the NCAA will announce its regional selections on May 1 at 8 p.m. (CST) on the Golf Channel. The regional tournaments will be played on May 13-15 and the NCAA Championship is set for May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Texas Tech has made 17 straight NCAA postseason appearances and was a championship quarterfinalist last season.
