No. 15 Softball Advances in Baton Rouge Regional with 40th Win
May 17, 2019 | Softball
The Red Raiders advanced to the top of the winner’s bracket thanks to a 3-0 win over Louisiana Tech.
BATON ROUGE, La. – Erin Edmoundson tossed her sixth shutout of the season and helped the No. 15 Texas Tech softball team advance to the winner's bracket with a one-hit, 3-0 victory over Louisiana Tech on Friday at Tiger Park.
Â
Edmoundson limited the Lady Techsters to just one hit while Tech collected six on the day. Jessica Hartwell led the Red Raider offense with two hits, as well as the game-winning RBI, in her first NCAA postseason appearance and Trenity Edwards was the other Red Raider to knock in a run.
Â
Tech's 40th victory of the season marks the first 40-win season of the head coach Adrian Gregory era and is Tech's highest win total since it went 41-17 in 2012.
Â
Moving to a 20-3 record, Edmoundson ranks fifth all-time in single-season wins and shutouts.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Edmoundson used two strikeouts and a load of fly balls to hold the Lady Techsters hitless through the first two innings. After Zoe Jones singled in the bottom of the second, Louisiana Tech's Morgan Turkoly produced what would be the Lady Techsters' only hit of the game in the top of the third.
Â
Tech threatened to score in the bottom of the fourth when Breanna Russell picked up Tech's third base hit, but a ground out and a fly ball to center field ended the charge.
Â
Edmoundson kept the Lady Techsters off the board once again in the top of the fifth and Kelcy Leach awakened the Red Raiders' bats with a leadoff single to left field. Fellow sophomore Olga Zamarripa came in to run at first base and a sacrifice bunt from Louisiana native Taylor Satchell put a runner in scoring position.
Â
After Tech's second out of the inning, junior Shelby Henderson stepped in to pinch hit and drew a key walk to bring up Tech's all-time RBI leader.
Â
Hartwell, who picked up NFCA Central All-Region Third-Team honors earlier this week, showed poise at the plate as she battled through a 12-pitch at-bat and drove in the game-winning run on a two-RBI triple to the right-center wall.
Â
Edwards kept the inning alive in the next at-bat with a shallow RBI single to left field and Hartwell came sprinting home to give the Red Raiders a comfortable 3-0 advantage.
Â
Edmoundson retired the Lady Techsters on three straight fly balls in the top of the sixth and she clinched Tech's 40th win of the season with a three up, three down effort in the final frame to send the Red Raiders to the top of the winner's bracket.
