Jordyn Brooks was tabbed to the Butkus Award watch list on Monday morning
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior linebacker Jordyn Brooks was tabbed Monday to the watch list for the prestigious Butkus Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top linebacker.
Â
Brooks is one of 51 preseason candidates for the Butkus Award and one of only four from the Big 12 Conference. He is the first Red Raider to be named to the Butkus preseason watch list since Pete Robertson was recognized prior to the 2015 campaign.
Â
Brooks has been among the most consistent linebackers in the Big 12 the past three seasons as he has totaled 259 tackles during that stretch, which is 70 shy of entering the top 10 in Tech history. Brooks has recorded at least 80 tackles in each of his seasons as he led the Red Raiders in the category during his 2016 true freshman campaign as well as his 2018 junior season.
Â
This is the first preseason honor for Brooks, who is coming off 84 tackles a year ago where he earned honorable All-Big 12 accolades by the conference coaches. The Houston native ranked ninth in the Big 12 for total tackles per game (7.0) and 11th in tackles per game in league games (7.3).
Â
The Butkus Award, named after legendary linebacker Dick Butkus, will name its semifinalists on Nov. 4 before releasing its finalists on Nov. 25. The 2019 winner of the Butkus Awards will be announced Dec. 10.
Â
Brooks is one of three Red Raiders already named to a preseason watch list this summer, joining Alan Bowman (Davey O'Brien, Maxwell Awards) and McLane Mannix (Biletnikoff Award). Watch lists for the Outland Trophy and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, among others, will be unveiled later this week.
