Tech Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Honors

The Red Raiders posted a top-25 grade point average for the 2018-19 academic year.

The Red Raiders were one of five Big 12 Conference schools to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award while Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia were the other league members to earn the accolade. Additionally, Tech was one of 25 Division I institutions, as well as the only Big 12 team, to earn Academic Honor Roll distinction.

Head coach Tony Graystone's squad recorded a 3.36 cumulative GPA for the 2018-19 academic year.
"I'm very proud of our academic accomplishments and appreciative of the time and commitment our team continues to show in this area," Graystone said. "We have a team that truly cares about their academic success and we see how they prioritize their studies every day. I also want to thank Brandy Huskey and Josh Collier, along with everyone at the MSC for their work with our team and providing us with the resources to be successful."
In the fall, Tech placed a program-record 10 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Teams – nine first-team selections and one second-team nod. The Red Raiders also paced the Big 12 for the second straight year as four student-athletes recorded 4.00 grade point averages.
The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but two, while more than doubling the total over the last eight academic years. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 1,125.
