The Outland and Bronko Nagurski Trophies tabbed Jack Anderson and Jordyn Brooks to their watch lists Tuesday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior offensive lineman Jack Anderson and senior linebacker Jordyn Brooks were both named to preseason watch lists Tuesday with Anderson landing among the preseason candidates for the Outland Trophy and Brooks for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
Â
This is the first preseason watch list this summer for Anderson and the second for Brooks, who was tabbed a candidate for the Butkus Award on Monday morning. Anderson has also been recognized on the preseason All-Big 12 team and the Dave Campbell's All-Texas team already this summer.
Â
Anderson is one of 83 players up for the Outland Trophy, which honors the nation's top interior lineman (both offensive and defensive). He is the first Red Raider named to the Outland Trophy watch list since current Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman Le'Raven Clark in 2015.
The Frisco native has started in all 25 games of his Red Raider career, earning Freshman All-America honors as a true freshman in 2017 and then All-Big 12 second team accolades a year ago. He was on the All-Big 12 first team compiled by Pro Football Focus this past season, which used a grading system to determine its selections.
Â
Brooks, meanwhile, is one of 92 players on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list, which recognizes the defensive player of the year in college football. The award is sponsored by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.
Â
The Houston native has been among the most consistent linebackers in the Big 12 over his three-year career where he has recorded 259 tackles, only 70 shy of entering the top 10 in Tech history. Brooks has recorded at least 80 tackles in each of his three seasons as he led the Red Raiders in the category during both the 2016 and 2018 campaigns.
Â
The Outland Trophy will name up to eight semifinalists for the award on Nov. 20 before trimming that list to three finalists on Nov. 25. The 74th Outland Trophy winner will be announced Dec. 12 during The Home Depot College Football Awards live on ESPN.
Â
The Nagurski Trophy will be determined from a field of five finalists, which will be unveiled on Nov. 20 ahead of the Dec. 9 banquet where the 2019 recipient will be announced. The winner is chosen based on the recommendation of the FWAA All-America Committee, which utilizes input from the association's full membership.
Â
The Red Raiders are just over one week away from the start of their first preseason camp under head coach Matt Wells. Tech will host its first practice on Aug. 2 ahead of the Aug. 31 season opener against Montana State.
