Scrimmage was the first of two leading up to the Aug. 31 season opener versus Montana State
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech wrapped its first full week of training camp with its first preseason scrimmage followed by postgame water balloons Saturday night inside Jones AT&T Stadium.
Matt Wells put the Red Raiders through roughly 90 plays on the evening, all while celebrating his 46th birthday. The Red Raiders honored their first-year head coach with a rendition of "happy birthday" immediately after the scrimmage as well as several friendly water balloons on his way up the visiting tunnel.
"It was good give-and-take," Wells said. "I wasn't sure if it would be fairly one-sided. The defense has kind of won the last couple days. The offense did a really nice job in the red zone. Both two-minute drills ended on a fourth down stop and a pick by the defense. There was some explosiveness on offense and really good give-and-take for scrimmage No. 1."
The Red Raiders will take Sunday off before returning to the Football Training Facility practice fields Monday afternoon. Tech will host its second and final scrimmage of training camp next Saturday, which will be closed to the public and media.
Wells will make his debut as head coach of the Red Raiders in exactly three weeks when Tech hosts Montana State. Kickoff on Aug. 31 is slated for 3 p.m. on FOX Sports Net and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
