Red Raiders in Third at The Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, California – Texas Tech senior Sandy Scott is in ninth and the Red Raiders are third after the opening round of The Carmel Cup on Friday at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Scott finished the opening round of his senior season at 2-under-par with five birdies on the front-9 before shooting 1-over on the back-9 with eight pars. He birdied two of the four par 5s on the course to finish with a 70 to lead the Red Raiders. Andy Lopez will go into Saturday's second round in 11th individually with a 71, while Kyle Hogan and Ludvig Aberg are tied for 17th after posting a 72 on Friday.
The Red Raiders shot 2-under as a team (358) and are behind Oklahoma which leads the tournament after posting an 11-under 349 to start the season. Arkansas finished at 7-under (353) to put themselves in second and five strokes ahead of Tech going into the second round.
Texas Tech sophomore Jansen Smith shot 1-over and is currently 21st on the individual leaderboard, while Markus Braadlie shot a 79 to open the tournament. Lopez is at 1-under after recording three birdies, including on No. 17 to dip below par. Aberg, playing in his first collegiate tournament, made a tournament-best 16 pars and birdied one par 5. He completed his round with his lone bogey on the par 5, 543-yard finishing hole. Â Hogan recorded his 72 with three birdies, but was even after his first round by also making three bogeys.
Oklahoma's Garett Reband leads the tournament after the first of three rounds after shooting 7-under (65), followed by Trent Phillips (Georgia) who is at 5-under. A pair of Arkansas players, Julian Perico and Mason Overstreet, are tied for third after posting 68s.
The second round is set for Saturday with the third and final round on Sunday. Tech, which advanced to its 18th NCAA regional last season, is playing in its first of four fall tournaments. The Red Raiders finished the day with 19 birdies and 71 pars on Friday.
Aberg and Scott were named to the Golf Channel's Preseason Haskins Award Watch List earlier in the day before the start of their round. Scott remained on the Haskins Award Watch List throughout last season, while Aberg gained recognition to propel himself onto the list as a freshman with a strong showing at the U.S. Amateur Championship. He is currently at No. 40 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings after the event. Scott will travel to play in the Walker Cup from Sept. 7-8 at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, United Kingdom.
