PEBBLE BEACH, California – Texas Tech junior Andy Lopez shot 7-under-par and the Red Raiders cut 15 strokes off their opening round score for a 343 (17-under) on Saturday to leap up to second on the leaderboard at The Carmel Cup at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Tech has recorded a 358-343 – 701 through two rounds and will go into Sunday's final round two strokes back of Oklahoma (349-350 – 699) at the season-opening tournament. Lopez's career-low round of 65 has him in second place and two-round total of 71-65 – 136 (8-under), while Sandy Scott is in fifth at 70-67 – 137. Lopez recorded a bogey-free round and recorded an eagle on the par 5, 511-yard second hole. His round of 7-under included five birdies, including on the par 5 finishing hole. Scott worked himself up five spots with seven birdies during his second round, including birdieing the final three holes going into Sunday's round.
Oklahoma's Garrett Reband leads the tournament at 65-70 – 135 for a one-stroke advantage over Lopez who is tied with Turner Hosch (OU) and Julian Perico (Arkansas) at 8-under. The third and final round of The Carmel Cup is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. (CST) on Sunday.
Kyle Hogan is 13th on the individual leaderboard with a 72-69 – 141, followed by Jansen Smith who is at 144 after shooting 1-under on Saturday. Ludvig Aberg, who is playing in his first collegiate tournament, is currently 22nd overall with a 72-73 – 145 and Markus Braadlie is a 150 through two rounds after shooting 1-under with two birdies and only one bogey on Saturday after opening the tournament with a 79 on Friday.
Lopez, who is in his second season at Tech after transferring from SFA, is coming off a strong summer where he advanced to the U.S. Amateur Championship following a win at the Bayou Oaks at City Park qualifier in New Orleans.
Aberg and Scott were named to the Golf Channel's Preseason Haskins Award Watch List earlier in the day before the start of their round. Scott remained on the Haskins Award Watch List throughout last season, while Aberg gained recognition to propel himself onto the list as a freshman with a strong showing at the U.S. Amateur Championship. He is currently at No. 40 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings after the event. Scott will travel to play in the Walker Cup from Sept. 7-8 at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, United Kingdom.
The Red Raiders will return to competition after Pebble Beach from Sept. 23-24 at the Iverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio to play in their second of four fall tournaments.
