Red Raiders Close Road Swing with Sweep Over Idaho

The Red Raiders posted their second sweep of the season in a 3-0 win over Idaho.
LAS VEGAS – The Texas Tech volleyball team returns to Texas on a high note after the Red Raiders swept the Idaho Vandals, 3-0, on the final day of the UNLV Invitational at Cox Pavilion. Senior Emily Hill led the Red Raiders with 16 kills and junior Libero Emerson Solano racked up 15 digs.

With the win, the Red Raiders improved to 6-4 overall before returning home to United Supermarkets Arena. Freshman Caitlin Dugan was the other member on the squad to rack up double-digit kills, as she posted 10 against the Vandals.

Collectively, the squad put combined for 58 kills (.316) and sophomore Katy Northcut boasted Tech's only ace of the match.

Idaho took an early 4-2 lead, but it did not take long for the Red Raiders to make up lost ground. A 4-1 lead for the Red Raiders gave Tech its second lead of the set. Leading 11-10, Idaho was called on a double and Cadi Boyer's first kill of the match forced a timeout from the Vandals. From there, the Red Raiders never surrendered the lead and a kill from Hill gave Tech a four-point lead. Adding even more separation, an Idaho attack error made it a five-point gap and the Vandals called for a respite. Idaho went on a 5-2 run out of the break, but one final kill from Caitlin Dugan clinched a 25-23 win to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead.

SET TWO – Texas Tech 25, Idaho 21
Hill's seventh kill of the day gave the Red Raiders a 3-2 lead in the second set and, after one point for the Vandals, she threw down a solo block on the left side to help Tech reclaim the lead. Boyer immediately followed up with a kill, but Idaho stayed neutralized the set, 6-6, shortly after. The Red Raiders managed to take a 13-11 lead, but Idaho chipped away at Tech lead and tied the set once again. Another kill from Hill broke a 17-17 deadlock and a 4-2 run for the Red Raiders created a 22-19 gap in the set. Idaho tallied two points towards the tail end of the set but kills from Allison White, Brooke Kanas and Dugan closed the second set, 25-21, in favor of the Red Raiders.

The Red Raiders dominated the final set and used seven kills out of the gate to take a 10-3 advantage. Idaho recorded one point, but Rohme responded with her second kill of the match to help Tech maintain a seven-point lead. The teams traded points before three consecutive points for the Red Raiders, highlighted by a Kanas kill, forced an Idaho timeout. The Vandals scored four points out of the break, but Tech responded with a 4-2 run to further its lead. Hill's 16th kill of the match moved Tech to the 20-point mark and one final kill from White sealed the sweep as the Red Raiders took the third set, 25-19.Â
