Captains Named for UTEP Game

Texas Tech’s four captains chosen from a group of 16 captains that were elected for the 2019 season
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells announced Thursday the captains for this week's game against UTEP, set for Saturday night at 7 p.m. under the lights at Jones AT&T Stadium.
Of the 16 captains elected prior to the start of the season, Eli Howard, Alan Bowman, Adrian Frye and Jax Welch will be representing the Red Raiders during the coin toss against the Miners. This marks the first appointment as captain for all four student-athletes in 2019.
Howard, a junior defensive lineman from San Angelo, Texas, will make his 20th career start up front for the Red Raiders on Saturday. Howard has been a force on the line since arriving at Texas Tech in 2017, racking up 65 tackles, 12.5 tackles-for-loss, 9.0 sacks and 15 quarterback hurries.
Bowman picked up where he left off from his 2018 freshman season, completing 40-of-53 passes for 436 yards through the air and two touchdowns while rushing for one other. The sophomore from Grapevine, Texas, leads the NCAA in passing yards through the first week of the season.
Frye, a sophomore defensive back from Houston, Texas, made the start at safety against Montana State, a position he transitioned to over the offseason after earning Freshman All-America honors at cornerback last season. Frye led a defensive unit that allowed just 289 yards of offense to the Bobcats, including 2-of-16 on third-down conversions.
Welch, a junior running back out of Odessa, Texas, was one of eight Red Raiders rewarded with a scholarship at the end of fall camp due to his consistent work ethic and leadership qualities. After appearing in all 12 games as a sophomore on special teams, Welch got his first career carries against Montana State, rushing for 18 yards on two attempts, including a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter.
