LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior defensive back Douglas Coleman III and senior tight end Donta Thompson will play this evening in the Hula Bowl, which is slated for a 9:30 p.m. CT kickoff from Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Â
The duo has spent the past week on Oahu, training in front of NFL personnel while also participating in several community service initiatives associated with the bowl. Former NFL head coaches Rex Ryan and Mike Smith will coach the two teams.
Â
Coleman put together his best season as a Red Raider in 2019 as ranked third in the FBS with eight interceptions, all of which that came against power-five foes. He was the only player in the country to record at least eight interceptions against power-five opposition.
Â
Coleman's strong season earned him All-Big 12 first team honors by the conference coaches and recognition as a semifinalist for the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award, which is presented to the nation's top defensive back. In addition to his interception numbers, he also broke up two additional passes and ranked third on the team with 63 tackles from his safety position.
Â
Thompson, meanwhile, started all 12 games for the Red Raiders at tight end, a new position for the Tech offense under head coach Matt Wells and offensive coordinator David Yost. Thompson ended the year with 26 catches for 311 yards, the bulk of which came during Big 12 play. He earned All-Big 12 honorable mention accolades by the conference coaches.
Â
Coleman and Thompson are two of five All-Star game selections for the Red Raiders this season as the trio of Jordyn Brooks, Terence Steele and Broderick Washington Jr. were all picked for the Reese's Senior Bowl, which took place Saturday afternoon. Washington also participated in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl over a week ago.
Â
Television coverage of the Hula Bowl will be provided by CBS Sports Network.
