Red Raiders to Take on No. 9 Texas A&M in Dallas
January 31, 2020 | Men's Tennis
DALLAS, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team will continue their spring season with a match against No. 9 Texas A&M at the SMU Tennis Complex in Dallas on Sunday.
The Red Raiders are 3-2 on the year and have won once away from Lubbock when they defeated Iowa in Iowa City to open the season.
FAMILIAR FOES FACE OFF IN DALLAS:
The Red Raiders and Aggies will battle it out on a neutral court for the third-consecutive year when they take the court at the SMU Tennis Complex in Dallas. Tech picked up their eighth all-time victory against the Aggies a year ago when they defeated then-No. 14 A&M by a margin of 4-3.
Sunday's meeting will be the second-straight matchup in Dallas between the two programs. First serve for Sunday's match is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
RED RAIDERS IN THE RANKINGS:
The Oracle/ITA Division I men's singles and doubles rankings were last updated at the conclusion of the fall session on Nov. 10, 2019.
Ilgiz Valiev reached the highest ranking of his career following a stellar fall as the No. 69 ranked singles player in the nation. Collier, who racked up seven wins in his first semester as a Red Raider, started his inaugural dual match season at No. 114.
QUICK HITS:
Seniors Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn were critical in last year's upset over A&M in Dallas as the pair collected three combined match points across doubles and singles play. Sophomore Franco Ribero provided the match-clinching win for the Red Raiders with a 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-3 effort on court six in the match a year ago.
Thomson has provided the Red Raiders with three wins in three appearances at the anchor position to start his spring. He is the only Tech player with three wins in the spring.
Spring additions Isaac Arevalo and Connor Johnson have made an early impact in their first few weeks on campus, going a combined 4-1 to begin the spring campaign.
The Red Raiders will aim to repeat their trend from a year ago, when Tech bounced back from a pair of losses in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend with a win against a ranked Aggie team in Dallas. The Red Raiders would go on to defeat two of three ranked opponents in the following week.
