Red Raiders Set For Big 12 Match Play Tournament as Reigning Champion
October 01, 2020 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will compete in the 2020 Big 12 Match Play Tournament this weekend as the reigning champion at the Golf Club at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas.
The Red Raiders won the second annual event last season by going undefeated with four pool play victories before knocking off Kansas in the championship match. This year's Big 12 Match Play Tournament begins on Friday with two matches before one on Saturday. The championship match will be played on Sunday afternoon following a morning round which will not count towards seeding. Â
Tech is represented this weekend by Ludvig Aberg, Andy Lopez, Sandy Scott, Garrett Martin, Baard Skogen, JP Roller and Carl Didrik Fosaas. Lopez, Scott, Aberg and Martin all helped lead the Red Raiders to last year's title while Skogen, Roller and Fosaas will be playing in their first Big 12 Match Play Tournament. Matchups of six spots will be made before each round.
The Red Raiders are the third seed in the tournament and are in Pool B with Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma State. Pool A is headlined by top-seeded Oklahoma which won this week's Colonial Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth along with TCU, Baylor, West Virginia and Iowa State. The fourth match in pool play on Sunday morning will not count towards the standings. Kansas State announced on Thursday that it withdrew from the competition in accordance with established K-State Athletics health protocols and Big 12 guidelines.
Lopez and Aberg are coming off 10th place finishes at the Colonial Collegiate which was played on Monday and Tuesday, while Scott took 15th. Lopez closed out the tournament with a low-round of 65 on Tuesday afternoon to match Aberg at 3-over for the 54-hole event. Aberg shot a 68 in his final round to give the Red Raiders two players in the top-10 and secure third place behind Oklahoma and Texas in the season-opening event. Scott led the tournament through two rounds and Skogen, Martin and Fosaas were each in the top-30.
Scott and Aberg were both named to the Fred Haskins Award Preseason Watch List which goes to the most outstanding college golfer at the end of the season. The Tech duo were joined by seven other Big 12 players on the list.
The Big 12 Match Play Tournament is modeled after the format to determine the NCAA Men's Golf National Champion. Baylor won the inaugural event in 2018 before the Red Raiders won the championship last season.
Live scoring and results for the match play event will be available on Golfstat.com and Big12Sports.com.
The Red Raiders will continue their fall season after this weekend by playing at the Maridoe Collegiate from Oct. 16-20 in Carrollton, Texas before closing it out at the East Lake Cup (Oct. 26-28) in Atlanta, Georgia.
