October 10, 2020 | Women's Tennis
NORMAN, Okla.  – The Texas Tech Lady Raider tennis team opened play at the OU Invitational on Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The team will wrap up competition at the event on Sunday.
Â
The day started in doubles, where the Lady Raider doubles teams were matched up with duos from TCU, Oklahoma and North Texas. Nell Miller and Camryn Stepp picked up the first win of the weekend for the team, knocking off Saki Oyama and Sophia Hummel, 6-2. The win marked the freshman Stepp's first collegiate win, and the Lady Raider tandem's first win paired together.
Â
Matched up against tough, Big 12 competition, other Texas Tech duos battled but came up just short in their first action playing together. Freshmen Stepp and Kailey Evans fell, 7-5, to TCU's Polk and Pascual in their first collegiate action. Miller and newcomer Kaitlin Staines fell, 6-2, to Marie Norris and Alisa Soloveva of TCU. Staines and Evans dropped their match to Oklahoma's Carmen Corley and Ivana Corley, 6-3.
Â
Staines and Miller each picked up singles wins during the first day of competition in Norman.
Â
Staines went 2-0 in her first collegiate singles action as a Lady Raider. She knocked off Oklahoma's Carmen Corley in a thriller of a three-set match, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 [9], before closing the day with another extended match against Ivana Corley of Oklahoma, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 [14].
Â
Miller knocked off Carmen Corley as well, defeating the Oklahoma sophomore in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. In her first match of the day, the Lady Raider fell short to TCU's Marie Norris—who ended the 2020 season ranked No. 69 in the ITA singles rankings—in a tight three-set match, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 [7].
Â
Stepp and Evans each dropped three set matches against stiff competition in their first career collegiate singles matches. The pair of freshmen will look for their first career singles wins on Sunday.
Â
The Lady Raiders will close out the weekend with another round of singles and doubles on Sunday. Doubles will start up at 9 a.m. with Tech paired against Oklahoma State and Arkansas. Singles will begin at 2 p.m.
