RED RAIDERS LOOK TO STACK SUCCESS
- After a one-point victory over Baylor, Matt Wells has challenged his program to "stack success" as the Red Raiders close the regular season with back-to-back games against No. 21 Oklahoma State and Kansas.
- Texas Tech is looking to wrap the regular-season with three-consecutive wins for the first time since 1995, its final year in the Southwest Conference.
- A victory over the Cowboys this weekend would mark the first time Texas Tech has won consecutive games in the month of November since 2015 when the Red Raiders topped both Kansas State and Texas en route to an appearance in the AdvoCare Texas Bowl.
RED RAIDERS VERSUS RANKED FOES
- The Red Raiders will be looking to knock off a top-25 opponent for a third-consecutive season Saturday after topping a ranked Oklahoma State program each of the last two years.
- Oklahoma State was No. 15 in the country two years ago when the Red Raiders handed the Cowboys a 41-17 rout in Stillwater.
- Texas Tech followed with a 45-35 victory over the No. 21-ranked Cowboys in 2019, marking its first top-25 win under Matt Wells.
- With a win Saturday, Matt Wells will become only the second Texas Tech head coach to record a top-25 win in each of his first two seasons, joining Tommy Tuberville (2010-11).
OFF WEEK GOOD FOR THE RED RAIDERS
- The Red Raiders are coming off their third and final open week of the 2020 season.
- Texas Tech is 17-12 during the Big 12 era in the week after an open date as the Red Raiders topped West Virginia at home earlier this season.
- Matt Wells is an impressive 9-2 over his career in games immediately following a bye week.
INSIDE THE SERIES
- This will be the 48th all-time meeting between Texas Tech and Oklahoma State as the Red Raiders control a 23-21-3 advantage in the series that dates back to 1935. Â
- The Red Raiders will be looking to win three-consecutive games in the series for the first time since the 2000-02 seasons. It is one of three different times in the series where Texas Tech has won three straight over the Cowboys.
- The Red Raiders snapped a nine-game losing streak to Oklahoma State in their last visit to Stillwater following a 41-17 victory in 2018. It marked the first time Tech had topped Oklahoma State away from home since the 2001 season.
- Texas Tech and Oklahoma State have produced several high-scoring shootouts in recent years as the two schools have combined for at least 75 points in seven of the past eight meetings.
TEXAS TECH – OKLAHOMA STATE CONNECTIONS
- The relationship between the two head coaches in this weekend's game dates back to the early 1990s when Matt Wells was a high school quarterback and Mike Gundy was a young assistant coach on the Oklahoma State staff. Gundy, the quarterbacks coach for the Cowboys at the time, recruited Wells to Oklahoma State before he eventually chose to accept a scholarship to Utah State.
- Wells is one of four Oklahoma natives on the Texas Tech, joining his brother, inside receivers and tight ends coach Luke Wells, defensive coordinator Keith Patterson and offensive line coach Steve Farmer.
- On the Oklahoma State staff, cornerbacks coach Tim Duffie earned his degree in exercise and sports science from Texas Tech in 1999 following a four-year career for the Red Raiders. Duffie was a two-year starter for head coach Spike Dykes where he recorded 202 tackles.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES VS OKLAHOMA STATE
- Alan Bowman followed a record-setting performance against Houston two years ago with a memorable game against Oklahoma State as the then-true freshman completed 76.1 percent of his passes (35-of-46) on his way to finishing with 397 yards and two touchdowns through the air while also rushing for one other.
- Texas Tech combined for six sacks against the Cowboys a year ago, the first of which caused a key fumble as Eli Howard and Jaylon Hutchings got to Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders on its opening drive.
- Oklahoma State has always been a favorable opponent for Eli Howard as the senior has 3.0 sacks (two solo) over his career versus the Cowboys.
- DaMarcus Fields has recorded two of his four interceptions over his career against the Cowboys as he went 95 yards for a pick-six in 2017 and then added another early in the second quarter of last season's victory.
- T.J. Vasher finished with more than 100 receiving yards for the third time in his career in the 2019 meeting as he secured five catches for 110 yards and a touchdown.
SEASON NOTES
- The win over Baylor was the first of three needed by the Red Raiders to end the regular season with a .500 record, essentially increasing their chances for the 39th bowl appearance in school history and the first under Matt Wells.
- This will be Texas Tech's first 11 a.m. kickoff of the season and the sixth time under Matt Wells. The Red Raiders are 10-6 in road games that begin in the 11 a.m. hour since 2005 and 1-1 during that span in all early starts against Oklahoma State (loss in 2011, win in 2019).
- Texas Tech improved to 3-2 at home this season with its win over Baylor as the Red Raiders will look to add another victory a week from now against Kansas for its first winning season at home since going 4-2 in 2015.
- Texas Tech has committed only 53 penalties for 437 yards so far this season. Through eight games, it marks the fewest penalty yards dating back to 2000.
