Texas Tech Set for Showdown with Texas
November 05, 2020 | Women's Soccer
Red Raiders primed to meet visiting Longhorns Friday night at The Walker.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will close its home slate Friday night with what is sure to be a slugfest with rival Texas.
The John Walker Soccer Complex's final match of the fall will feature one of the closest and most hotly contested rivalries the Big 12 Conference has seen in recent years. The Red Raiders will be seeking their third straight win over the Longhorns, but while Tech has gotten the best of Texas in each of the previous meetings in Lubbock and Austin, the series is dead even at 5-5-3 over the last 13 encounters. All but one of those victories either side has secured during that span have been by just one goal. In fact, only once since Tom Stone arrived at Tech has a game featured a multi-goal margin of victory.
Even more so, many games have required more than regulation to decide; five of the last seven meetings between the two squads have gone into overtime.
"A ton of these games have gone to overtime," said Stone. "We've won in overtime, they've won in overtime. We've won big games against them at home and on the road, and they've beaten us at home and on the road. Talk about a tight series."
He continued, "The separator has been a special moment. Last year it was Macy and Charlotte, the year before it was Kirsten. This year we hope the player with the special moment is wearing red and not orange."
Last year's iteration of the rivalry was indeed special for Tech. Trailing in Austin with 90 seconds left after an own goal, the Red Raiders equalized when Charlotte Teeter rose above a crowded box to head in a corner kick. The score sent the then-No. 17 visitors into a frenzy as they pulled the game level to force overtime on the hosts' senior day. Six minutes into the first period, Macy Schultz chipped the Longhorn keeper to send Tech's bench rushing the field. The goal completed a huge six-point road weekend that would set the Red Raiders up to contend for their first-ever Big 12 regular season title going into the last weekend of the season.
Additionally, the win would lead Tech to a sweep of the Big 12 weekly awards. Teeter picked up the first Offensive Player of the Week award of her career for her tying goal and the assist on the winner, while Schultz was named Freshman of the Week. Eventual Big 12 Freshman of the Year Madison White was named Defensive Player of the Week after shutting out both Baylor and Texas.
Drama also surfaced during the Longhorns' last trek to Lubbock in 2018. A rowdy crowd of over 2,000 fans was strapped in for a back-and-forth thriller that saw neither side able to net the winner as the clock inched toward zeroes. With regulation coming to an end and yet another overtime affair seemingly approaching, Jayne Lydiatt slipped a ball through to Kirsten Davis in the 87th minute. Davis beat the Texas keeper, going off the post and in to call game. Tech's upset of the then-No. 17 Longhorns marked the first time the Red Raiders had been able to knock off their rivals – at home or on the road – since 2013.
All-American junior Cassie Hiatt, whose first game against the Longhorns ended with Davis' winner in 2018, emphasized the team's attitude going into any meeting with Texas.
"Getting hyped up to play such a rival is so fun," she said. "This week at training, you don't need a reason to get the team hyped up. You should already be there. Texas is a good opponent. They're physical like we are and it's a good matchup. They always give us a good challenge."
First touch with the Longhorns is set for 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
