
Culver, Ramsey to Begin NBA Seasons

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will have two players on NBA active rosters at the start of the season with Jarrett Culver beginning his second season with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Jahmi'us Ramsey set to start his rookie campaign with Sacramento. Culver and the Timberwolves will host Detroit in their season opener on Wednesday, while Ramsey and the Kings play at Denver on Wednesday to begin the season.

Culver finished his rookie season by averaging 9.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. He started 35 games and played in 63. Culver scored a career-high 26 points in a game against Toronto and scored 24 against Memphis. He finished his first year in the NBA by scoring in double figures in 32 games and had a career-high six assists in another game against the Grizzlies. An All-American at Texas Tech who helped lead the Red Raiders to the NCAA Championship Final as a sophomore, Culver was selected with the sixth pick of the 2019 NBA Draft.
Ramsey was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the 43rd pick of the 2020 NBA Draft after a freshman year at Tech where he earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year, All-Big 12 Second Team, NABC All-District First Team, Big 12 All-Newcomer Team, Big 12 All-Freshman Team and was a three-time Big 12 Newcomer of the Week selection. Ramsey played in four preseason games for the Kings and averaged 2.0 points per game.
Ramsey's selection in the NBA Draft gives the Red Raiders and head coach Chris Beard three straight years with a pick following Zhaire Smith (2018) and Jarrett Culver (2019). Smith has signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Memphis after being with the Philadelphia 76ers organization the past two seasons, while Tariq Owens is now with the Long Island Nets (G-League) after signing a two-way contract with Phoenix last season. Owens averaged 10.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.3 blocks in 24.3 minutes of play a game in the G-League last season and appeared in three games with the Suns.
