Lady Raiders Split Friday Doubleheader

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team opened their home slate with a 4-0 win over Abilene Christian in and a 4-1 loss to No. 25 South Carolina at Lubbock Country Club in a Friday doubleheader.
Tech is now 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in Lubbock after Friday's matches.
The Lady Raiders and Gamecocks started in doubles, as South Carolina started out with a 1-0 lead after taking victories on courts one and two.
Tech was able to pick up one doubles win, with freshman Bojana Marinkov and senior Reagan Collins defeating South Carolina's Kennedy Wicker and Elise Mills, 7-5, on court three. The win was the Lady Raider duo's first victory together this season.
Sophomore Nell Miller tied up the score with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Silvia Chinellato on court four. The win moved Miller to 4-1 in dual action this season.
After South Carolina's No. 22 Megan Davies put the Gamecocks back up with a win on court two, Lady Raiders Olivia Peet and Margarita Skriabina were able to force third sets on their courts to extend the match.
South Carolina stretched their lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win over Peet by No. 25 Mia Horvit.
The Gamecocks sealed up the 4-1 win as Skriabina fell, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, by Emma Shelton.
In their match with the Wildcats, the Lady Raiders took early command of the match with an early pair of 6-2 doubles wins in doubles by Lisa Mays/Miller and Marinkov/Collins on courts one and three, respectively.
Tech moved quickly through their singles matches to clinch Friday night's match. The second point was secured by Mays on court two with her first singles win of the day at a 6-1, 6-1 clip. Skriabina provided the third match point for Tech with a 6-1, 6-0 win on court four. The fourth and final match point would be taken by Miller who recorded her second singles win of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph on court three.
The Lady Raiders will be back in action to face No. 5 NC State on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the McLeod Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
