Red Raiders in Second at The Prestige After Opening Round

LA QUINTA, California – The No. 9-ranked Texas Tech men's golf team is in second place after the first round of The Prestige Presented by Charles Schwab led by freshman Ludvig Aberg who is in fifth after shooting 3-under-par on Monday at the Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST. Â
The Red Raiders opened the three-day, 54-hole tournament by shooting a 6-under 278 as a team and are just three back of No. 1-ranked Pepperdine which shot a 275 in its first round. No. 16 Texas is third at 5-under, followed by No. 22 UCLA and UC Davis which are tied for fourth at 285 in the team standings. The tournament will resume at 9:30 a.m. (CST) on Tuesday with the Red Raiders starting on the back-9. Â
Aberg is two strokes back of tournament leader Joey Vrzich who opened the tournament at 5-under for Pepperdine on Monday, while sophomore Markus Braadlie is in ninth overall after posting a round of 2-under for the Red Raiders. Andy Lopez finished at 1-under which puts him 17th going into Tuesday second round and Sandy Scott shot even-par to position himself in the top-25 and within striking distance. Kyle Hogan began the tournament by shooting 3-over. Texas Tech and Pepperdine both led the field with 21 birdies each.
Garrett Martin shot 5-under and is in second place at The Prestige Individual Tournament being played at the Coral Mountain Golf Club, while Jamie Stewart shot even-par and Jansen Smith is at 1-over after the first round. Martin opened the individual tournament with four birdies and also made eagle on the par 5, 578 yard No. 9 hole. He had only one bogey on his scorecard and is just three back of SMU's Jackson Markham who shot 64 (8-under) on Monday to take the lead.
Aberg began the second spring tournament by making five birdies and only two bogeys in California after starting last week's Amer Ari Intercollegiate with rounds of 66-68. He finished at 2-under on par 3s on Monday to lead the Red Raiders. Braadlie, who played last week's tournament as an individual, shot his 2-under 71 by matching Aberg with five birdies and also had 11 pars. He fell back some with a bogey on No. 5 before making a double-bogey on the par 3, 181-yard No. 7 hole. Lopez also finished the first round with five birdies, but finished his round with a bogey and double-bogey on No. 17 and 18. Scott, who is ranked No. 9 nationally in the Golfstat rankings for the collegiate season and No. 8 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, finished in 10th place last week in Hawaii and is at even-par after the first round this week after making 12 pars, three birdies and three bogeys.
Top-ranked Pepperdine has three players in the top-10 after Monday's round led by Vrzich who leads the tournament and Sahith Theegala who is in second after shooting a 67 which puts him in a three-way tie at 4-under with Thomas Hutchison (UC Davis) and Noah Goodwin (SMU).
Live scoring through Golfstat will be available for all three rounds and the final round will be live streamed on Golfweek.com from 12-5 p.m. on Wednesday. The Prestige is the second of a six-tournament spring schedule that will lead into the Big 12 Championship on April 27-29 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Red Raiders will return from California to compete at the Southern Highlands Collegiate from March 1-3 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tech finished fourth at last year's Southern Highlands.
LSU is the defending tournament team champion — and has won three of the last four — while Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland was last year's individual medalist at 8-under (68-71-66–205). In all, five former tournament team champions will be playing at this year's event: LSU, Oklahoma State, Stanford, UCLA, and Northwestern. UCLA, LSU, and TCU, have all won the tournament three times, while Stanford and Washington are also multiple winners. Stanford has also claimed individual medalist honors five times, followed by TCU (3), UC Davis (2), Washington (2), and Pepperdine (2). Pepperdine won the Amer Ari last week followed by the Longhorns who took runner-up.
