Nate Rombach named National and Big 12 Player of the Week
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech freshman Nate Rombach was named the inaugural D1Baseball National Player of the Week and the Big 12 Player of the week on Monday, while fellow freshman Jace Jung took home Big 12 Newcomer of the Week accolades.
Â
These are the first honors of any kind for the duo in their young Red Raider careers.
Â
Rombach becomes the seventh Red Raider in program history to be recognized as the national player of the week. He joins Orlando Garcia (2017), Bobby Doran (2010), Miles Morgan (2006), Josh Brady (2004), Jon Weber (1999), Monty Ward (1998) and Joe Dillon (1997) as Tech players that have been honored by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper as national player of the week. Tech has also had four players since 2015 to earn hitter of the week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association.
Â
Rombach joins Grant Little from 2017, Barrett Barnes from 2010, Roger Kieschnick from 2006, and Josh Bard from 2007 as Red Raider freshman to be named player of the week by the conference. Texas Tech has claimed the first Big 12 Player of the Week honor of the season in five of the last six years.
Â
The Mansfield, Texas, product blasted five home runs on the weekend, four of which were of the three-run variety, on his way to 15 RBI for the weekend. He is tied for the nation's lead in home runs and ranks second in RBI.
Â
Jung, meanwhile, is the 21st Red Raider to win Big 12 Newcomer of the Week since 2011. It's the third time in the last four years Tech has claimed the award after opening weekend.
Â
The San Antonio native was right behind Rombach with 13 RBI for the weekend while going 8-for-16 with a pair of home runs. His RBI total ranks third in the nation.
Â
