The freshman was named D1Baseball National Player of the Week and Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech freshman Nate Rombach received his second National Player of the Week award following his explosive debut weekend, this time from the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA), the organization announced Tuesday.
Â
Rombach has piled up the awards this week as he was named the inaugural D1Baseball National Player of the Week along with Big 12 Player of the Week. These are the first collegiate honors for the freshman catcher.
Â
Rombach became the seventh Red Raider in program history to be recognized as the national player of the week on Monday, joining several Tech greats that have been honored by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. This is the first time a Red Raider has received the honor from the NCBWA as four Red Raiders have previously been named the NCBWA Hitter of the Week.
Â
The Mansfield, Texas, product blasted five home runs on the weekend, four of which were of the three-run variety, on his way to 15 RBI for the weekend. He went 7-for-14 overall, adding two doubles to finish with a 1.714. On Saturday alone, he went yard four times in a doubleheader sweep, including three dingers in the run-rule win over Houston Baptist.
Â
Rombach is tied for the nation's lead in home runs and ranks second in RBI. He helped power a Red Raider offense that plated 65 runs in four games and ranks as the nation's top offense in batting average, home runs, on base percentage and slugging percentage and sits at second in runs per game.
Â
The competition ramps up this weekend as Texas Tech takes part in the inaugural Round Rock Classic where they'll square off with Tennessee, Stanford and Houston. Tech opens the event at 7 p.m., Friday against Tennessee.
