Aberg Rises to Second at The Prestige

LA QUINTA, California – Texas Tech freshman Ludvig Aberg will go into the final round of The Prestige Presented by Charles Schwab at 4-under-par and just two shots back of the lead while the No. 9-ranked Red Raiders are in fifth after the completion of Tuesday's round at the Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST.Â
Aberg shot 1-under in the second round of the three-round tournament and is in a seven-way tie for second place behind tournament leader Leo Oyo who is at 6-under for San Diego State after posting 68s in his first two rounds. Texas Tech is at 3-under as a team with a 278-287 – 565 scorecard and is 11 shots back of No. 16 Texas which shot 9-under on Tuesday and is at 14-under for the tournament. No. 1 Pepperdine is in second at 9-under (275-284) followed by No. 22 UCLA and No. 42 San Diego State which are at 4-under.

The final round is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. (CST) with tee times. The Red Raiders will be paired with Oklahoma State, Oregon State and SMU for their final round.Â
Aberg shot his round of 1-under on Tuesday with three birdies, 13 pars and two bogeys following a five-birdie opening round, while Sandy Scott is tied for 19th at 1-under for the tournament after recording 71-70 – 141 through the first two days. A senior from Scotland, Scott made three birdies in the second round and also two bogeys. He's made 25 pars through his first 36 holes. Through two rounds, Aberg leads Tech with eight birdies and also has made 24 pars.
Andy Lopez and Markus Braadlie are tied for 28th at the event at 1-over through two rounds, while Kyle Hogan is at 7-over after shooting 75-74 going into Wednesday's final round. Lopez was a 1-under on Monday before carding a 73 on Tuesday with two birdies and four bogeys, while Braadlie shot 3-over with two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in the second round.
At The Prestige Individual Tournament being played at the Coral Mountain Golf Club, Texas Tech sophomore Jansen Smith shot 6-under on Tuesday and will go into the final round tied for eighth. A San Angelo native, Smith is at 73-66 – 139 at the tournament which puts him 11 back of the leader Jackson Markham (SMU) who has opened with a pair of 64s. Garrett Martin and Jamie Stewart are tied for 12th at 4-under through two rounds. Martin has a scorecard of 67-73 – 140, while Stewart's two-round 4-under comes with 72-68 – 140 on the board.
Texas leads the tournament with all five players in the top-20 in the individual standings, while Pepperdine is second with three top-10 competitors. Oyo leads the tournament at 6-under after posting a 3-under despite a triple-bogey on No. 16. Aside from that one bad hole, Oyo made four birdies and also had an eagle on the par 5, 617-yard No. 8 hole. Along with Aberg, a contingent of Travis Vick (Texas), William Mouw (Pepperdine), Eddy Lai (UCLA), Spencer Tibbits (Oregon State), Thomas Hutchison (UC Davis) and Joey Vrzich (Pepperdine) are all tied at 4-under going into the final round. The Longhorns shot 9-under on Tuesday which was a four-stroke improvement, while Pepperdine followed its opening round 275 with an even-par 284 to fall five shots back of the lead. UCLA finished at 5-under on Tuesday and San Diego State was at 7-under after its round to put themselves in a tie for third. The Red Raiders opened the three-day, 54-hole tournament by shooting a 6-under 278 as a team and were just three back of No. 1-ranked Pepperdine which shot a 275 in its first round. No. 16 Texas was third at 5-under, followed by No. 22 UCLA and UC Davis which are tied for fourth at 285 in the team standings.
The Prestige is the second of a six-tournament spring schedule that will lead into the Big 12 Championship on April 27-29 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Red Raiders will return from California to compete at the Southern Highlands Collegiate from March 1-3 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tech finished fourth at last year's Southern Highlands.
LSU, which is currently in 10th place at 5-over, is the defending tournament team champion — and has won three of the last four — while Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland was last year's individual medalist at 8-under (68-71-66–205). The Cowboys are currently in eighth place at 1-over at the tournament. In all, five former tournament team champions will be playing at this year's event: LSU, Oklahoma State, Stanford, UCLA, and Northwestern. UCLA, LSU, and TCU, have all won the tournament three times, while Stanford and Washington are also multiple winners. Stanford has also claimed individual medalist honors five times, followed by TCU (3), UC Davis (2), Washington (2), and Pepperdine (2). Pepperdine won the Amer Ari last week followed by the Longhorns who took runner-up.
