Texas Tech to Provide Headspace App to Student-Athletes
February 21, 2020 | Student-Athlete Development
Mindfulness app will be available for each of Texas Tech’s more than 400 student-athletes
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics announced this week a partnership with Headspace, a mindfulness app that will be made available to each of the university's more than 400 student-athletes and full-time athletics department employees. This opportunity is coming as part of Wellness Week, which is focused on a wide variety of wellness aspects and working toward creating a culture of holistic health.
Â
The research based Headspace app, which has more than 60 million users in roughly 190 countries, strives to help lower feelings of stress, anxiety, pain, burnout, depression and irritability among users, while also raising feelings of focus, resilience, happiness and better decision making. Additionally, Headspace offers content specific to sport and performance and partners with industry leaders such as the NBA, WNBA, LPGA, MLS and USA Soccer.
Â
"We are always looking for new ways to best support the needs of our student-athletes," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "The Headspace app is an industry leader in mindfulness, which will provide our student-athletes an easily-accessible resource they can utilize at any time. This will be a great addition that we are thrilled to provide."
Â
Headspace features over 1,200 hours of content spread over 60 topics, providing plenty of material for the various needs of each student-athlete. In addition to its goal of improving mental health, the app is intended to increase focus, confidence, calmness and motivation among users.
"Traditionally, there has been an exclusive focus on the physical conditioning of athletes, but we are becoming increasingly aware of how much mental conditioning is a crucial determinant of success," said Dr. Tyler Bradstreet, Texas Tech's Director of Clinical and Sport Psychology. "Texas Tech Athletics places a strong emphasis on mental wellness. Mindfulness training with Headspace will allow our student-athletes to build important mental skills that will help them succeed in sport and in life."
Â
Texas Tech introduced the app to its student-athletes this week to coincide with Wellness Week, a week-long initiative by the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Academy and the sports medicine staff to promote a culture of health and wellbeing.
