Red Raiders to Host Pair of Weekend Doubleheaders
February 27, 2020 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team are set to continue their spring campaign with a four-match home stand this weekend against New Mexico State, Tulsa, New Mexico and UTSA at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders will begin their weekend with a doubleheader against New Mexico State (10 a.m.) and Tulsa (3:30 p.m.) on Friday, Feb. 28. Tech will wrap up play on Sunday with another pair of matches against New Mexico (12 p.m.) and UTSA (5 p.m.) on Saturday, March 1.
Tech is currently 8-4 on the season, including a 2-0 mark in Lubbock.
RED RAIDERS IN THE RANKINGS:
The Oracle/ITA Division I team rankings were updated on Feb. 25. Tech earned second-consecutive ranking of the 2019-20 season when they landed at No. 18 on Tuesday. The Red Raiders were previously ranked No. 21.
Player rankings remained unchanged from the previous week. Senior Parker Wynn, after previously being unranked in the polls, jumped to No. 53 in the singles rankings on Feb. 20 following a stellar weekend in Mississippi where he took down back-to-back ranked opponents at the primary position, including No. 27 Giovanni Oradini of Mississippi State. Wynn's ranking of No. 53 is the highest of his Red Raider career.
Junior Ilgiz Valiev also remained ranked in last week's standings at No. 74, while freshman Reed Collier jumped to No. 123 after being unranked in the previous poll.
Bjorn Thomson and Wynn rose five spots from No. 60 to 55 in the doubles rankings a week ago.
QUICK HITS:
The Red Raiders hold a 70-42 all-time record against the four opponents they will face this weekend, including a 46-9 mark at home. Tech holds a series lead against New Mexico State, Tulsa and UTSA, combining for a 56-14 clip against the three teams.
Despite trailing the Lobos 14-28 in the history of the series, the Red Raiders have won their last five against New Mexico and are 13-2 in their last 15 matchups. Tech's last loss was in a neutral-site contest in Tucson in 2015.
Franco Ribero currently leads the team in singles victories during dual match play, as the sophomore has won seven-straight matches to begin the year. He holds a 6-0 mark on court five and is 1-0 on court three. Thomson narrowly trails Ribero with six wins of his own in 2020, courting a 6-3 clip in the first 12 matches.
Wynn leads the team with ranked wins this year with three victories over nationally-ranked foes. Wynn is tied with Valiev for the second-most dual match wins this season with five.
Tech has found success with a recent shuffling of doubles partners, as the Red Raiders are 6-3 in doubles play in their last four matches that featured doubles. Collier and Wynn are leading the way with a 2-0 record over that stretch.
Four wins on the weekend would move Tech to 6-0 at home for the second time in three seasons, as the Red Raiders most recently began the 2018 campaign with 12-consecutive wins in Lubbock before eventually falling to then-No. 6 TCU on senior day.
