
Lady Raiders Knock off No. 26 Arizona State in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Texas Tech women's tennis team picked up its first ranked win of the year on Saturday, coming back to defeat No. 26 Arizona State on the road.

After dropping the doubles point to start the match, the Lady Raiders picked up four singles wins—three of which came in three sets—to come back and clutch the win late.

The Lady Raiders and Sun Devils traded wins to open doubles play. Arizona State struck first on court two, but Tech responded with a 6-3 win on court three by Reagan Collins and Bojana Marinkov over Lauryn John-Baptiste and Sasa Klanecek. The Sun Devils would clinch the doubles point in a tiebreaker on court one, as Tereza Kolarova and Ilze Hattingh held off Lady Raiders Lisa Mays and Nell Miller.

Texas Tech got on the board first in singles, as Miller knocked off No. 91 Savannah Slaysman, 7-6, 6-4, on court four to tie the match at one apiece. The win moved Miller to 8-2 in dual matches this season and 5-1 at the No. 4 singles spot.

Arizona State took back a 2-1 lead after No. 38 Ilze Hattingh held off Lady Raider sophomore Olivia Peet in the top singles position. Trailing, 5-1, in the second set, Peet was able to hold off a number of match points and fight back to tie the match at 5-all before Hattingh finally put the match away.

Marinkov tied the match up again on court five, defeating John-Baptiste, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1, to move to 4-4 on the dual season.

Arizona State would put itself one win away from clinching the match with a win over Lisa Mays on court three with a Tereza Kolarova three-set win over Lisa Mays.

Freshman Margarita Skriabina would respond for Tech, holding off No. 120 Sammi Hampton for her third ranked win this season. Skriabina defeated Hampton, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, for her fifth-straight victory.

Tied at 3-all, the match came down to court six, where Isa Di Laura had just forced a third set in a second-set-deciding tiebreaker after dropping her first set, 6-0. Di Laura battled Sasa Klanecek, in the third set, and was able to pick up the match-clinching victory in an 0-6, 7-6, 6-4 match for her first dual win of the season.

The Lady Raiders will be back in action next week when they open conference play against Oklahoma State on Friday night at 6 p.m. in Stillwater, Okla.
