Karrington Jones will spend part of her summer in Anaheim, Calif., training with the U.S. Collegiate National Team.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a strong showing at the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts, Texas Tech volleyball's Karrington Jones became the fifth Red Raider in program history to earn a spot on the U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team. The six-foot middle blocker will spend part of her summer training with the U.S. Collegiate National Team-Anaheim program in Anaheim, Calif.
"I'm so excited to get to play with and compete against such talented athletes, on top of being coached by the USA volleyball staff," Jones said. "This is such a great opportunity and I can't wait to get started."
The CNT Anaheim will train June 21-27 in Anaheim at the American Sports Centers where they will compete side-by-side with the U.S. Women's National Team as it makes final preparations for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Â
"I'm very happy for KJ and proud that she'll be representing the Red Raiders this summer," head coach Tony Graystone said. "KJ has easily been one of our most improved players over the past year and it's great to see her hard work recognized with an invitation to train with the Collegiate National Team. I think this will be the beginning of a great junior year for her."
Â
Now one in five Red Raiders to join a U.S. squad, Jones joins Brooke Kanas (freshman 2019), Reyn Akiu (junior, 2017), Rachel Brummit (senior, 2014) and Breeann David (senior, 2014).
Â
Taking on an increased roll in 2019, Jones stood tall at the net and led the Red Raiders with 92 blocks (0.92 per set) in her sophomore season. She started all but five games in 2019 and ranked fourth on the team with 164 kills.
Â
Jones collected three double-digit kill matches over the course of the season and posted a career-high 10 blocks in a huge win over Kansas on Oct. 16. She buried a career-high 12 kills against TCU and powered 15 points in a big win for the Red Raiders at UNLV on Sept. 19.
Â
Athletes were selected through the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts held Feb. 21-23 at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
