Lady Raider Tennis Drops 4-3 Heartbreaker at Oklahoma
March 08, 2020 | Women's Tennis
NORMAN, Okla. – The Texas Tech women's tennis team dropped a tough one on Sunday afternoon, falling, 4-3, at Oklahoma in an epic match that nearly lasted three-and-a-half hours.
Â
The Sooners took the doubles point to open the match, as the Lady Raiders fell on courts one and three; however, Lady Raiders Margarita Skriabina and Lisa Mays were locked in a tight match with No. 17 Jasmine Asghar and Oleksandra Korashvili on court two, tied at 5-all as the match was left unfinished after Oklahoma clinched the point.
Â
In singles, the teams traded blows back and forth, with the match ultimately decided by the back three courts that all went three sets. Texas Tech and Oklahoma would split the six matches in a thrilling race to four, but Oklahoma eventually came out on top.
Â
The Sooners would strike first in singles, as Oklahoma's Korashvili outdueled Skriabina in a 6-2, 6-2 match.
Â
Oklahoma's lead wouldn't last long, however. Just minutes after Korashvili's win, Texas Tech was able to get a couple of points from Olivia Peet and Lisa Mays to tie the match at two.
Â
Mays got the Lady Raiders on the board, taking down Carmen Corley, 6-3, 6-1, before Peet picked up Tech's second point with a 6-3, 6-1 win of her own over No. 74 Martina Capurro. It marked Peet's third ranked win of the season.
Â
The match came down to courts four, five and six, which were all headed to third sets. At No. 4, Bojana Marinkov had just forced a third set with a 6-4 win in the second following a tough loss in her opening frame. The third set was all Marinkov, as the freshman won the third set, 6-2, to put the Lady Raiders up, 3-2.
Â
Tech's run would end, unfortunately, as the Sooners pulled away late in third sets on courts five and six to clinch the win.
Â
The Lady Raiders will be back in action on Friday at 5 p.m. when they travel to Iowa State.
