Red Raiders Lead Conference with Seven Honorees on Academic All-Big 12 Team
April 28, 2020 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team landed seven players on the Academic All-Big 12 first team, as announced by conference officials on Tuesday.
Tech's seven selections were the most of any program in the Big 12, besting Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas who each had four representatives. The seven players also mark the most for a Red Raider squad since at least the 1999 season.
Senior Bjorn Thomson notched his third career appearance and his second-consecutive honor with a 4.0 GPA. Sophomore Francisco Vittar joins Thomson in his first year of eligibility, as the pair mark the only men's players in the conference to maintain a 4.0.
Seniors Jackson Cobb and Parker Wynn made their first team debuts, while junior Ilgiz Valiev was honored for the second-straight season. Junior Justin Bloss and sophomore Franco Ribero round out the nominees for the Red Raiders for the first time in their respective careers.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
