Texas Tech leads District 7 schools with three selections.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Three members of the Texas Tech baseball program have been named to the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team on Thursday for their excellence in the classroom and on the diamond.
Â
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Clayton Beeter, junior catcher Braxton Fulford and senior infielder Brian Klein are joined on the District 7 First Team by eight other players. The three selections were the most in District 7, which includes Division I schools from Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Nevada and Idaho.
Â
Additionally, Tech was one of four schools across the country with at least three selections, joining Harvard, Duke and the U.S. Naval Academy.
Â
Beeter, a Mechanical Engineering major with a 3.94 grade-point average (GPA), was a Freshman All-American closer for the Red Raiders in 2019 before transitioning to the role of Friday night starter in 2020. In the shortened season, he went 2-1 overall with a 2.14 ERA, showing major improvement in his command as he struck out 33 and walked just four over 21.0 IP. He limited opponents to .169 hitting and led the Big 12 with 14.14 strikeouts per nine innings.
Â
Fulford, a Finance major with a 3.90 GPA, has made catching one of the nation's most dynamic pitching staffs look easy throughout his career. The Lubbock native started 57 of Tech's 66 games in 2019 behind the plate and hit a team-best .406 during its postseason run to the national semifinals. The 2019 NCAA Elite 90 Award winner, Fulford carried his strong play into the 2020 season where he had already driven in 11 runs and held a .379 on base percentage.
Â
Klein, a Business Management major with a 3.30 GPA, entered 2020 on several preseason All-America lists, and he did not disappoint. The Keller, Texas, native hit .391 in the shortened season while starting all 19 games for the Red Raiders. He ranked second in the nation and led the Big 12 with 10 doubles while also ranking second in the conference in runs scored.
Â
Honorees selected first-team Academic All-District will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. Academic All-America honorees will be announced from June 8-11.
Â
To be eligible for Academic All-District and All-America distinction, nominees must have reached at least sophomore academic standing and have a 3.30 GPA or higher to go along with legitimate on-field contributions.
