Thomson Selected as CoSIDA Academic All-American
June 19, 2020 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior men's tennis player Bjorn Thomson became the fourth athlete in program history to earn Academic All-America status after being selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team on Friday.
Thomson joins former Red Raiders Charley Bailey (1991, 1992), Michael Innerebner (2005), and Bojan Szumanski (2005, 2008) as the only Red Raiders to achieve the accolade. Thomson is the first to land on the second team.
The CoSIDA selection was the fourth of Thomson's storied career in Lubbock. In total, Thomson has been recognized for his academic achievements eight times in his career.
A sport management major, Thomson is the only tennis athlete in the Big 12 Conference to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American this year.
Thomson's senior campaign concluded with a 9-3 singles mark in dual matches, as he tied Franco Ribero for the most wins in the spring. He also racked up a 7-2 record in doubles with partner Ilgiz Valiev on the third court. He also set a new program record for career doubles victories with 87, surpassing former Red Raider Gonzalo Escobar's mark of 82.
Despite the cancellation of spring competition during COVID-19, CoSIDA continued its sponsorship of the Academic All-America awards program. Student-athletes were selected based on career statistics.
