Former Red Raiders Set for MLB Opening Day

Major League Baseball begins abbreviated 60-game season on Thursday
LUBBOCK, Texas – Major League Baseball will open its 2020 season this week with two Red Raiders on Opening Day rosters. Josh Tomlin (Braves) and Robert Dugger (Marlins) were named to their respective club's 40-man rosters as the MLB gets set to begin its regular season Thursday and Friday amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following a three-week preseason camp, the MLB will hold a 60-game season, with teams playing 40 games against its divisional opponents and 20 against the opposite league's corresponding geographical division (AL East vs. NL East).

This marks the 11th season for Tomlin in the big leagues, his second with the Braves after spending his first nine years with the Indians. He made a career-high 51 relief appearances last season, posting a 2-1 record with two saves and a 3.74 ERA. Dugger, meanwhile, made his MLB debut last season at the age of 24 and earned seven starts towards the end of the season.

Additionally, Tech alums Stubby Clapp and Joe Dillon are coaching for the Cardinals and Phillies, respectively. Clapp is in his second year with the Cardinals and Dillon was named the hitting coach for the Phillies after winning a World Series title last year with the Nationals.

Texas Tech was also well represented in the de facto "spring training" before the start of the upcoming season, where each team was permitted to organize a 60-man player pool in their home ballparks for a three-week camp. Joining Tomlin and Dugger at their team's camps were Josh Jung (Rangers), Clayton Beeter (Dodgers), A.J. Ramos (Dodgers) and Danny Coulombe (Twins),

Per MLB rules, teams must cut their rosters to 28 after 14 days of regular season play. Additionally, each club can carry up to a three-person taxi squad on the road once the regular season begins.

Tomlin's Braves begin their campaign against the Mets in New York on Friday at 3 p.m. (CDT), while Dugger's Marlins open in Philadelphia at 6 p.m. (CDT) Friday.
