Lopez Leads TTU Contingent at U.S. Amateur Championship

BANDON, Oregon – Texas Tech rising senior Andy Lopez shot 2-under-par in the opening round of the U.S. Amateur Championship on Monday at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort which has him in the top-20.Â
Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas is at 1-under, while Jansen Smith shot even-par which puts them in the top-50 going into the second round. Sandy Scott, who is a two-time All-American and announced his return to Texas Tech last month, is at 2-over followed by Markus Braadlie (3-over), Garrett Martin (6-over) and Kyle Hogan (10-over) to account for the historic seven TTU representatives at the tournament.
McClure Meissner (SMU) leads the tournament at 8-under followed by Aman Gupta and Travis McInroe who are both at 7-under in the 264-player field.
Lopez, who earned All-American honors last season, finished his opening round with five birdies, including three on the back-9 to shoot 69. Playing in his first U.S. Amateur Championship, Lopez was even-par through nine with two birdies and two bogeys before birdieing 10, 14 and 16. Meen Fosaas, who is from Norway and redshirted last season after transferring from Keiser (NAIA), finished at 1-under after making four birdies and an eagle in his first U.S. Amateur. Smith was at 3-under through nine holes before four bogeys and a birdie evened his opening round.
The tournament will continue on Tuesday with 18 more holes of stroke play before the tournament is cut to 64 players and match play. The event concludes on Sunday with a 36-hole championship match.
