BANDON, Oregon – Texas Tech senior Sandy Scott advanced in the U.S. Amateur Championship with a 3&2 win in the Round of 64 Match Play on Wednesday, while Red Raiders Andy Lopez, Jansen Smith and Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas were eliminated on the third day of competition at the Bandon Dunes Resort.
Scott, who was down three strokes through six holes to Brayden Garrison (Tennessee), stormed back with a birdie on No. 7 to cut his deficit to two strokes before running off three straight birdies on No. 9, 10 and 11 to take a one-stroke lead. He increased his lead to two strokes with a birdie on the par 5, 573-yard No. 13 hole and closed out the victory with a par on No. 16 and Garrison carding a bogey.
Scott will play in the Round of 32 of Thursday with his opponent to be determined later tonight following the completion of today's competition in Oregon.
Lopez dropped his match 3&2 to Sam Bennett (Texas A&M) after being tied through eight holes after a pair of birdies by the rising Tech senior. The two would exchange birdies on the next two holes to remain tied before Bennett birdied 11, 13 and 16 to end the match.
Before the start of the Round of 64, Smith and Meen Fosaas were in an 18-competitor playoff for the final three spots in the match play portion but were eliminated. Meen Fosaas and Smith were both at 2-over through 36 holes of stroke play and would make par on their first two playoff holes.
Lopez, who earned All-American honors last season, led Texas Tech during the first two days of stroke play by shooting 3-under to reach match play. He would card a 71 on Tuesday which put him in 18th place going into match play. Lopez finished his opening round on Monday with five birdies, including three on the back-9 to shoot 69. Scott would shoot a 2-under 70 on Tuesday after a 73 during Monday's round. For his first two rounds, he was at even-par with five birdies on his card on Tuesday's final stroke play round. A two-time All-American, and currently at No. 6 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Scott announced his return to Texas Tech last month.
Texas Tech started the tournament with a program-record seven players including Markus Braadlie, Kyle Hogan and Garrett Martin each missed the cut after stroke play. The tournament has now gone from 264 golfers to 32 with the champion to be crowned on Sunday with a 36-hole match play.
