BANDON, Oregon – Texas Tech returning senior Sandy Scott's run at the 120th U.S. Amateur Championship came to a close with a 2&1 loss in the Round of 32 to Davis Chatfield on Thursday at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
A two-time All-American and currently at No. 6 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Scott announced his return to Texas Tech last month before competing this week at the U.S. Amateur. He started the tournament strong in stroke play on Monday and Tuesday before earning a 3&2 win in the Round of 64 Match Play on Wednesday to advance.
Scott was playing in his second U.S. Amateur Championship after reaching the Round of 64 of match play last year at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina.
Against Chatfield (Notre Dame), Scott was 1UP after a birdie on No. 2 but then was down two after he followed a birdie by Chatfield on No. 3 with two bogeys. After both players made par on the next three holes, Scott would birdie three of the next five holes to tie the match but made bogey on No. 16 and No. 17 to fall in the match.
Scott, who was down three strokes through six holes to Brayden Garrison (Tennessee) in the Round of 64 on Wednesday, stormed back with a birdie on No. 7 to cut his deficit to two strokes before running off three straight birdies on No. 9, 10 and 11 to take a one-stroke lead. He increased his lead to two strokes with a birdie on the par 5, 573-yard No. 13 hole and closed out the victory with a par on No. 16 and Garrison carding a bogey. In stroke play, Scott would shoot a 2-under 70 on Tuesday after a 73 during Monday's round. For his first two rounds, he was at even-par with five birdies on his card on Tuesday's final stroke play round.
With his World Amateur Golf Ranking, Scott is in contention for a spot in the U.S. Open where the top-seven ranked players who have not already qualified will secure their spot in the US Open at Winged Foot Golf Club which was moved to a starting date of September 17 in Mamaroneck, New York. That cutoff will be decided on August 23.
Texas Tech had a program-record seven players compete in the tournament including Andy Lopez who advanced to the Round of 64 Match Play and Jansen Smith and Carl Didrick Meens Fosaas who were eliminated in a playoff. Markus Braadlie, Kyle Hogan and Garrett Martin each missed the cut after stroke play. The tournament has now gone from 264 golfers to 16 with the champion to be crowned on Sunday with a 36-hole match play.
