
Talaba to Make Grand Slam Debut at French Open

LUBBOCK, Texas – Former All-American Lady Raider tennis player Gabriela Talaba will make her Grand Slam debut this week at the 2020 French Open, it was announced as the list of players was released this weekend. The event runs from Monday, Sept. 21 to Sunday, Oct. 11.

Talaba will open qualification singles against Denmark's Clara Tauson.

The Texas Tech product by way of Romania has racked up four ITF singles titles since 2017—most recently the $25,000 Ascension Project Women's Open in September of last year.

Talaba will look to make noise in her first Grand Slam event, ranking 240 in the world in singles and boasting a career high ranking of 227.

During her time at Texas Tech, Talaba won the first and second ITA All-America awards in program history. She helped the Lady Raiders to four-straight NCAA tournament berths, four-straight Sweet 16 appearances, two Elite Eight appearances and the highest ranking in program history (No. 5).

Talaba was a five-time first-team All-Big 12 recipient and was named Big 12 Player of the Year in 2017.
