Soccer Preview: Texas Tech Faces #21 West Virginia Sunday Afternoon

WVU will be the first ranked opponent Tech faces this season
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Texas Tech soccer team (10-3-2, 3-2-1 Big 12) faces preseason Big 12 favorite and No. 21 West Virginia Sunday afternoon at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

Tech is coming off a 2-1 comeback win over Iowa State Thursday night. Following a scoreless first half, the Cyclones jumped on the board first in the 49th minute. The Red Raiders were able to level the match in the 74th minute thanks to a strike from Kirsten Davis. The goal was the 13th of the season and 44th of her career, which moved her into second place all-time in points scored at Texas Tech.Â

The Red Raiders kept their foot on the gas pedal and broke the tie in the 86th minute. Gisselle Kozarski headed home a pass from Macy Blackburn inside the six-yard line for the eventual game-winner.Â

Scouting West Virginia
The 21st-ranked Mountaineers sit at 8-4-2 overall with a 2-2-1 conference record, most recently, falling at home to No. 11 TCU, 1-0. Lauren Segalla spearheads the attack with six goals thus far, while four Mountaineers have tallied at least three assists.Â

Kayza Massey has made 14 starts in goal this season and holds a 0.72 GAA.Â

Team Captains
Davis and Cassie Hiatt are serving at team captains for the second straight season. A defender from Parker, Colorado, Hiatt has been a dominate player for the Red Raider defense for three seasons beginning with a Big 12 All-Freshman campaign to get started. Hiatt earned All-America honors as a sophomore along with All-Big 12 First Team. Davis, who was selected No. 13 in the NWSL College Draft, decided to return to school to play her fifth season at Texas Tech. She had 16 goals as a junior to earn Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and All-America honors.Â

Our Leader
A Dallas native who won a national championship as a player at Duke, Stone is in his 15th season leading the program after roles at Denver, Duke and Clemson. He has led the Red Raiders to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including to the Sweet 16 in 2014. Tech won the 2015 Big 12 Tournament and has had eight double-digit win seasons under Stone's leadership.

Our Gold Medalist
Texas Tech welcomed Janine Beckie back to Lubbock on Saturday, August 14 after the former Red Raider helped lead Canada to the gold medal in Tokyo. Beckie, who is the all-time leading goal scorer in Tech history with 57, is currently playing professionally with Manchester City FC. Canada won the gold medal with a shootout win over Sweden in the championship game.
