Karrington Jones and Brooke Kanas will use their extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to fall 2020 student-athletes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Red Raider volleyball senior middle blockers Karrington Jones and Brooke Kanas have announced Friday they will return to Texas Tech for the 2022 volleyball season.
The duo will utilize the blanket waiver approved by the NCAA for all 2020 fall sports student-athletes to retain a year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jones and Kanas contributed heavily to the Red Raiders return to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 20 years. The veterans helped the Red Raiders to the most team blocks since the 2011 season, with 279. They each finished the season in the top 10 in the Big 12 in hitting percentage, both posting career-best marks.
Jones was named All-Big 12 Second Team for the first time in her career after finishing the season with the fourth best hitting clip in the Big 12 (.358), a career-high 221 kills and the second most blocks on the team (90). She also added a career-best seven service aces. Her 279.5 points were the third most on the team.
Following the Red Raiders' loss to FGCU in the first round of the NCAA Championship, Jones hinted at her return to continue the success the team had built. "We have shown that we are supposed to be here [the NCAA Championship], we proved that to ourselves and everyone watching," she said. "We'll be back. We are going to get in the gym and work. This won't be the last time you see Texas Tech here."
After spending three seasons as an outside hitter for the Red Raiders, Kanas made the transition to middle blocker for her senior season. She had an instant impact with a team-leading 114 blocks, the 7th highest mark in the Big 12. Her 20 solo blocks were the most by a Red Raider since Lauren Douglass' 21 in 2016. Kanas posted 199 kills on a .319 hitting clip, the eighth best mark in the conference.
Overall, Jones and Kanas contributed to 73 percent of the Red Raiders blocks and nearly 30 percent of the team's kills. They combined for 548.5 of Tech's 1,860 points during a historic season.
