Aberg Earns Co-Champion Honors at The Prestige
February 17, 2021 | Men's Golf
PALM SPRINGS, California – Texas Tech sophomore Ludvig Aberg earned co-champion honors at The Prestige with a three-way tie at 4-under-par for the individual title. Aberg, who led going into the final round on Wednesday, rallied with birdies on two of his final four holes to secure his first individual collegiate championship where he watched as Trevor Werbylo (Arizona) and Jacob Skov Olesen (TCU) also completed their rounds at 4-under at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West.
Texas Tech finished its first spring tournament with an 8th-place finish at 17-over (293-281-295 – 869), while Arizona and North Carolina tied for the team championship at 4-under. Pepperdine finished third at 3-under followed by Arizona State (2-over), SMU (8-over), Stanford (13-over) and TCU (14-over) in the 24-team event. Aberg is the second Red Raider to win a tournament this season following Kyle Hogan who won the Maridoe Collegiate in the fall.Â
Aberg finished the tournament at 4-under by shooting 69-67-73 – 209. Down three strokes with holes to play, Aberg would birdie No. 15 and 16 while Olesen double bogeyed with four holes to play to drop back. Olesen (71-68-70 – 209) and Aberg would both make par on their final two holes to finish at 4-under for the three-round event. The event did not go into a playoff due to darkness.
Markus Braadlie was the second top Tech player at the tournament by shooting 5-over with a three-round card of 71-72-75 – 218. His final round included three birdies, but also three double bogeys as he finished outside the top-30. Baard Skogen shot 8-over (77-70-74 – 221), Garrett Martin 12-over (76-72-77 – 225) and Hogan was at 13-over (77-76-73 – 226) to close out the first tournament of the spring.
Aberg moved up to No. 9 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking after earning a win at the Jones Cup Invitational two weeks ago along with a pair of professional wins back home in Sweden over the summer. His finish at The Prestige is his best collegiate showing following taking 10th at the Colonial Collegiate. Aberg had 10 birdies in the 54-hole tournament and only one bogey through two rounds after recording a bogey-free second round. He was 1-under in the final round through four holes before making four straight bogeys on No. 5-8. He regrouped, making four straight pars before another bogey that pushed him off the lead. Two birdies on 15 and 16 brought him back into the lead though before two pars to end his tournament.
Playing in The Prestige Individual Invitational, Carl Didrik Meen Fosaas finished at 4-under while JP Roller shot 3-over for the week at the Coral Mountain Golf Club. Meen Fosaas finished 11th at the individual event with a 71-72-69 – 212 scorecard and Roller posted 75-71-73 – 219 for his three rounds.
The Red Raiders will return from California to play their next two tournaments in Texas, starting at the Cabo Collegiate in San Antonio (March 1-3) ad the Texas Invitational (March 15-16) in Austin.
