March 15, 2021 | Baseball
No. 7 Red Raiders walk off Huskies, 9-8, in extras
LUBBOCK, Texas – Nate Rombach, Cal Conley and Braxton Fulford hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the 10th to send No. 7 Texas Tech baseball to a wild 9-8 walk-off win over UConn on Monday, completing a four-game sweep of the Huskies at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Â
Fulford's blast was the game winner, marking the first extra-inning walk-off home run by a Red Raider since Orlando Garcia against Baylor in 2015.
Â
The Red Raiders (14-3) trailed for much of the afternoon before a Dru Baker three-run home run gave them a 5-4 lead in the seventh. Tech carried a 6-4 lead into the ninth, but UConn (4-10) would score two to push it to extras.
Â
The Huskies scored two more in the 10th to take an 8-6 lead, but all three batters who came to the plate in the 10th homered to left field, capped by a no-doubter from the Lubbock native. Rombach, Conley and Fulford were a combined 0-for-11 with six strikeouts on the day prior to their heroics.
Â
Tech finished the game with 11 hits from eight different players. Eight different Red Raiders also scored a run in the contest. UConn, meanwhile, finished with 12 hits, led by a 5-for-5 effort from outfielder Kyler Fedko.
Â
Baker led the Red Raiders with three RBI in the contest, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored. The leadoff hitter finished with 10 runs in the series, twice as many as any other member of the club.
Â
Jace Jung and Parker Kelly also posted multi-hit games. Jung went 3-for-5 with an RBI double, while Kelly went 2-for-4 for the second straight day, providing a lift at the bottom of the lineup.
Â
Dylan Neuse provided a key run in the seventh after Baker's go-ahead home run. With two outs and nobody on, Neuse tripled to the gap in right center, then stole home to give Tech a 6-4 lead. The stealing of home was the first by a Red Raider since Zach Davis did so against No. 12 Texas in 2014.
Â
Tech used five freshmen and a transfer sophomore on the mound Monday. Freshman starter Chase Hampton allowed two runs on three hits in 3.0 inning of work. He was followed by a nice effort from Brady LeJeune-DeAcutis, who tossed 1.2 shutout innings. Freshman Brendan Girton would receive the win as he pitched the final two innings.
Â
UConn's Caleb Wurster received the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Senior starter Kenneth Haus gave the Huskies 3.2 innings, allowing a run on two hits.
