Martin Leads Tech on Opening Day in Austin

AUSTIN – Texas Tech sophomore Garrett Martin shot a pair of 2-under-par rounds at the George Hannon Collegiate on Monday and will go into the final round at 4-under and in fourth place at The University of Texas Golf Club.
The No. 19 Red Raiders are at even-par after the 36-hole day in Austin with a 286-282 – 568 scorecard which puts them in fourth going into the final 18 holes on Tuesday. No. 2-ranked Oklahoma leads the tournament at 13-under followed by No. 12 Texas which is in second at 11-under. No. 11 Oklahoma State is five shots ahead of Tech while New Mexico is in fifth at 5-over in the 13-team tournament.
Martin shot two rounds of 69 on Monday, starting with his first round where he recorded an eagle on the par-5, 562 yard No. 14 hole. He would also make three birdies and three bogeys in the round. His second round on Monday saw a finished card with four birdies and two bogeys. Texas Tech senior Kyle Hogan is in the top-15 going into the final round after posting 71-71 – 142 on Monday. His even-par day included four birdies in his second round after two in his first.
Ludvig Aberg is lurking at 1-over in 19th on the leaderboard after two rounds after posting 73-70 – 143 on Monday, while senior Andy Lopez and freshman Baard Skogen both shot 5-over. Aberg, who is at No. 5 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and is on the Haskins Award Watch List, has started the spring season with a win at The Prestige and a fifth-place finish at the Cabo Collegiate. His second round on Monday finished a 1-under with him making four birdies and three bogeys.
Oklahoma's Logan McAllister leads the tournament at 9-under followed by Pierceson Coody who is at 8-under. Martin is one shot back of OSU's Eugenio Chacarra who is in third at 5-under. Martin is one of 13 players in the 75-player field who are under-par through two rounds.
Texas Tech is scheduled to begin its third and final round at 9 a.m. on Tuesday with Skogen teeing off first on the front-9. The Red Raiders are paired with New Mexico and TCU.
TTU has three regular-season tournaments remaining after this week in Austin leading into the Big 12 Championship which is scheduled for April 26-28 at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kansas. The Red Raiders will follow up with a trip to Mississippi by playing in the Old Waverly Collegiate (March 26-28) and then the Aggie Invitational on April 9-11 at the Traditions Golf Club in College Station. The final tournament leading into the postseason takes TTU to Phoenix for the Thunderbird Collegiate on April 16-17.
