Red Raiders Defeat Rice & Extend Win Streak to Seven

Tech Takes First Match at the Ralph O’Connor Rice Invitational
HOUSTON – The No. 26 Texas Tech men's tennis team extended their win streak to seven matches by defeating the Rice Owls (4-0) during the first day of action at the Ralph O'Connor Rive Invitational.
From the coin flip Texas Tech came out strong. Doubles play saw Parker Wynn and Franco Ribero take down Conrad Russell and Sumit Sarkar of Rice 6-4. Dimitirios Azoidis and Isaac Arevalo soon followed by defeating Wes Bennett and Trinity Grear 6-4 to wrap up the doubles point.
After his Big 12 Conference Player of the Week selection, Ilgiz Valiev continued his dominate play. Valiev gabbed the Red Raider first point of singles play 6-4, 6-3, extending his season singles play record to 9-1. Sophomore Reed Collier wrapped up the Red Raiders 9th win of the year with a 7-5, 6-2 score.
"It was a hard fought win for the Red Raiders today against a good Rice team." Texas Tech assistant coach Michael Breler said. "We knew we were going to get their best today and I think our guys did a great job of just staying tough during some pivotal moments in the match and finding ways to win some close sets. We look forward to carrying our momentum into a tough matchup with Florida Atlantic tomorrow."
