Red Raiders Head to Mississippi for Old Waverly Collegiate

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 20-ranked Texas Tech men's golf team returns to competition this weekend at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in West Point, Mississippi.
The Red Raiders and a 14-team field are set for a three-day, 54-hole tournament at the Old Waverly Golf Club beginning on Friday before the championship round on Sunday. Tech is coming off a second-place finish (9-under) at the George Hannon Collegiate last week in Austin with third-place individual showings from sophomores Garrett Martin and Ludvig Aberg who tied by shooting 5-under at the event.
Tech will be represented this weekend by Aberg, Kyle Hogan, Martin, Andy Lopez and Baard Skogen in a tournament that consists of teams from No. 9 Texas A&M, No. 10 Vanderbilt, No. 13 Georgia, No. 21 Tennessee, No. 22 Arkansas, No. 24 Alabama, No. 25 LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Southern Mississippi, Kansas State, East Tennessee State and Little Rock. The Bulldogs of Mississippi State are the host for the par-72 event that will play out at 7,088 yards.
TTU is at No. 20 in the Golfstat and Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll coming into the tournament with seven top-25 opponents.
Aberg enters this weekend at No. 4 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and being selected for the Ben Hogan Award last week. A sophomore from Sweden, Aberg shot 6-under in his final round in Austin after shooting 7-under in his final round at The Cabo Collegiate for a combined 13-under in his final 18 over the past two tournaments. He is on the Haskins Award Watch List after beginning the spring season with his first collegiate win at The Prestige on Feb. 17 in California. Aberg has recorded under-par rounds in five of nine rounds this spring, highlighted by his 65 in the final round at TPC San Antonio and 6-under in the final round in Austin. Through five stroke-play events this season Aberg is 11-under combined in his final round and has shot in the 60s in five of 15 rounds.
Hogan and Lopez are seniors who will look to help lead Tech this weekend in Mississippi. Lopez finished 18th in Austin by shooting 75-72-68 (2-over), while Hogan was 24th at 4-over. Hogan began this season with a win at the Maridoe Collegiate Invite and competed in the PGA Tour's Houston Open. Lopez secured a 10th place finish at the Colonial with a final round of 5-under (65) for his top showing of the season.
A sophomore from San Antonio, Martin is coming off his best finish of his career with the third-place finish in Austin where he shot 69-69-70 – 208. He has recorded three top-10 finishes this season coming at the Maridoe Collegiate before his 5-under performance at the University of Texas Golf Club. Skogen is the lone freshman making the trip to Mississippi this week after finishing 31st in Austin where he was 6-over. Martin shot a season-low 67 (5-under) in the final round of The Cabo Collegiate.
Texas Tech will continue its spring schedule with its final in-state tournament with a trip to College Station from April 9-11 at the Aggie Invitational which will be played at The Traditions Golf Club. The final spring tournament is at the Thunderbird Collegiate (April 16-17) in Phoenix, Arizona which leads into the Big 12 Championship from April 26-28 at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
