Hogan Leads No. 20 Red Raiders in Old Waverly Collegiate Opening Round

WEST POINT, Mississippi – Texas Tech senior Kyle Hogan shot 2-under-par to open the Old Waverly Collegiate on Friday and is in eighth place to lead the No. 20 Red Raiders after the first of three rounds at the Old Waverly Golf Club.
Tech began the tournament at 2-over as a team which has it in ninth, but also just seven back of No. 10 Vanderbilt, No. 13 Georgia and No. 25 LSU who are in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard at 5-under going into the second round on Saturday. Â Along with Hogan, sophomore Garrett Martin shot 1-under on Friday and is in the top-15 after 18 of 54 holes of competition. There were 23 of 82 players who shot under-par in the opening round of the tournament that will conclude on Sunday.Â
Hogan shot his 2-under 70 by making five birdies, two coming on par 5s and two on par 4s to put himself into the top-10 after the opening day. The senior from Cypress had three bogeys on his first-round card and closed out his round with two pars after back-to-back birdies on No. 15 and 16. Martin made three birdies in his round of 1-under 71, including on No. 9 and 10 – both of which are par 5s.
Aberg opened the tournament by shooting 2-over 74 with three birdies, but also three bogeys and a double. Aberg, who is at No. 4 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and earned the Ben Hogan Award last week, has shot 7-under and 6-under in his final two rounds in the last two tournaments. Andy Lopez will go into the second round after shooting 75 on Friday, while Baard Skogen shot 79.
Mississippi State's Ford Clegg leads the tournament at 5-under after posting an opening round 67, while Shiso Go (East Tennessee), Matthew Riedel (Vanderbilt) and Connor Gaunt (LSU) are all at 4-under going into Saturday's second round.
Texas Tech will continue its spring schedule with its final in-state tournament with a trip to College Station from April 9-11 at the Aggie Invitational which will be played at The Traditions Golf Club. The final spring tournament is at the Thunderbird Collegiate (April 16-17) in Phoenix, Arizona which leads into the Big 12 Championship from April 26-28 at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kansas.
