Usoro, Nichols Break School Long Jump Record
March 26, 2021 | Track and Field
Long jump record falls twice on second day in Austin.
Both Ruth Usoro and Monae' Nichols broke the program record in the long jump Friday. Usoro wasted no time, shattering the school's all-time mark on her very first attempt. She landed her first at 22'-1" (6.73m). Her second attempt was 22'-0.75", followed by just a quarter-inch short of 22 feet at 21'-11.75". Right on brand, she saved her best for last. Usoro's final jump measured 22'-2.25" (6.76m). It is over a foot further than any Red Raider in history without wind, and six inches further than the best mark with it.

Nichols was next, landing a jump of 21'-5.5" (6.54m) on her final attempt. After four straight fouls, Nichols dug in and became the second Red Raider in school history – before Friday, of course – to jump 21 feet outdoors without wind.

On the runway next to them, Justin Hall and Jalen Seals finished top-five. Hall came away with a top mark of 25'-10.25" (7.88m) in what was his first long jump competition in a Tech uniform since scoring in the long jump at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Jalen Seals PR'd in the meet, too, jumping 25'-6.75" (7.79m). It is an overall PR for Seals, topping his previous mark set just two weeks ago at his nationals debut in Fayetteville.
The men's 4x100 qualified for Saturday's final on the heels of another sub-40 relay. After opening the season at 39.84 last weekend in Abilene, the group posted 39.96 to finish third overall in the preliminaries. The foursome consisted of three of last week's legs – Keion Sutton opening, Ashton O'Conner on the third leg and Justin Hall anchoring. The lone swap was freshman Daniel Omah stepping in for Karayme Bartley on the second leg.

Seasons Usual finished as the top collegian in the discus. Sitting in fourth going into her final attempt, Usual let go her top throw of the season. It landed 184'-3" (56.16m) from the ring to move her into second. It was just her third career throw of over 56 meters. With the lone thrower ahead of her being Asics pro Valarie Allman, Usual took home the collegiate title in the competition.

In the 100m, Peyton Ricks and Kiah Dubarry-Gay ran lifetime bests. Ricks clocked 11.54, while Dubarry-Gay turned in an 11.62. Ricks' PR is nearly a full quarter of a second below her previous best, an 11.77 she posted at the Big 12 Championships in 2019.

Lubbock native Sarah Tackitt made approaches at what would have been a personal best in the pole vault. Tackitt started her Tech outdoor career last week in Abilene and cleared 13'-1.5" (4.00m), marking just the second time she's gotten over four meters in her collegiate career. Friday's top height for the freshman was 12'-11.75" (3.96m), with her going out at 13'-5.75" (4.11m) – an inch-and-a-half PR.
