Tech Tallies Seven in Spring Opener

Red Raiders knock in seven against Lady Mustangs.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech began its spring with a comfortable 7-0 win over University of the Southwest Friday night at home. Kirsten Davis led the way with two goals and two assists.
"Usually in the spring we want to win every game," said head coach Tom Stone. "But there are certain things that need to go on in the spring to build a foundation. This spring, though, is different because they count towards our record. Because we were COVID-riddled in the fall, our record wasn't very good. So we've got a chance to fix that right now. We want to grow as a team and you can't throw this development period out the window, but we do want to win."
Davis' first career six-point performance began with generosity. She started by sliding a ball through to a wide-open Charlotte Teeter in just the fourth minute. Teeter, alone in the center of the box, received the ball and beat the Lady Mustang keeper to open scoring.
Fifteen minutes later, Davis found Macy Schultz streaking down the right side. Schultz burst in towards net and toe-poked the keeper between the legs to double the Red Raider lead. The lead increased again precisely 15 more minutes later when Brittany Martin headed in a corner delivered by Gisselle Kozarski.
Though not as quickly as in the first half, the Tech offense was busy again early in the second. Handling the ball on the far side of the box, Elise Anderson fired one towards goal that skipped through the keeper's hands and into the back of the net. It was her first collegiate score.
With two assists to her name, Davis got after putting them in herself. Her first goal came on a penalty kick in the 56th minute after she was taken down inside the 18-yard box. Her first attempt was saved, but the Lady Mustang keeper's inability to stay on the line awarded Tech another attempt. Davis was determined to put one in, and successfully converted on the second try. Exactly 40 seconds after that, she drove down the left side of net and toe-poked one into the opposite corner for her second of the night. Davis, who has tallied five points twice in her career, added a second assist to go with her pair of goals for the first time in her career.
Still, more goal scorers were hungry to get on the score sheet. This time, Kozarski desired a goal to go along with her assist. She received a low cross from Taya Lopez in the 85th minute. Like Teeter with the opening goal, Kozarski was wide open in front of goal. She tapped it in for her second career goal.
Making her official Tech debut Friday night alongside Lopez was Madison Michel. Lopez and Michel earned minutes last spring, though they were in exhibition games.
Tech's spring will continue next week in Bossier City, La., where they will play Alabama on Saturday.
