Texas Tech Invitational Day One Recap
March 06, 2021 | Softball
Texas Tech split day one of the Texas Tech Invitational with a win over Abilene Christian and a loss to Kansas City.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Red Raiders (7-8) opened up the Texas Tech Invitational with a win over Abilene Christian (4-11) before falling to Kansas City (9-1) Saturday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
One run would be enough for the Red Raiders in game one as a solo shot from Maddie Westmoreland proved to be the difference in Tech's win against ACU. Missy Zoch (4-2) pitched a complete game one-hit shutout with a season-high seven strikeouts to secure the 1-0 win over the Wildcats.
Despite eight total strikeouts and only one free pass, the Red Raider bullpen couldn't stop the Roos' bats in game two as Kansas City outhit Texas Tech 11-4.

The Red Raiders put a runner on base in each of the first three innings but failed to get a run on the board until a solo shot from Westmoreland broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. The senior sized up the first pitch of the inning for her first home run of the season to give Texas Tech a 1-0 lead.
Tech put a runner in scoring position again in the fifth inning as Yvonne Whaley reached base for the second time on a single to short and advanced to second on a ball put in play in the infield. A wild pitch moved Whaley to third to give the Red Raiders a two-out base runner 60 feet away from home, but a fly out to center field would end the inning.
Zoch was zoned in for Tech in the circle, retiring the final six batters of the game in order to clinch her team-leading fourth win of the season.
Texas Tech 2, Kansas City 7
Kansas City threatened early, loading the bases in the first inning with no outs. The Red Raiders would escape the inning with no harm done after a foul out, strikeout and ground out form the next three batters.
A couple of bloop singles on the left and right field lines put runners on the corners with one out for the Roos in the top of the second. A single up the middle would drive in the runner on third and give Kansas City a 1-0 lead in the second.
Erin Edmoundson retired the next seven Kansas City batters to keep it a one run game going into the Red Raider half of the fourth.
An error allowed Westmoreland to reach base and a single to left from Abbie Orrick gave Tech two base runners in the fourth, but a foul out to right field ended the two-out rally and kept the game at 1-0.
After striking out her fifth batter of the game, Edmoundson surrendered a solo shot to center field to double the Kansas City lead. The Roos passed the bat and followed up with a double to left and a single to right to push a third run across and force the Red Raiders to make a call to the bullpen.
Morgan Hornback came in to relieve Edmoundson, who went 4.2 innings giving up four runs while striking out five batters. The first Kansas City batter to face Hornback sent a ball over the left field wall to give the Roos a 5-0 advantage through five innings.
Texas Tech ended the shutout bid in the sixth inning after an error and a walk allowed Jacee Hamil and Karli Hamilton to reach base. Westmoreland came inches from her second home run of the day, sending a ball sky high into center field that was caught at the wall, allowing Hamlin and Hamilton to tag up and advance to second and third. Orrick tallied her first career RBI on a bases-clearing single up the middle to bring the score to 5-2.
Kansas City would get their two runs back in the top of the seventh to push the lead back to five at 7-2 and then retired the Red Raiders in order in the final frame to end the game.
Orrick recorded the first multi-hit and multi-RBI game of her career going 2-for-3 from the plate.
