Texas Tech picked up a pair of wins against Kansas City and Abilene Christian on Sunday.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball (9-8) closed out the final day of the Texas Tech Invitational on a high note, defeating Kansas City (10-2) and Abilene Christian (4-13) Sunday afternoon in Lubbock.
The Red Raiders won game one in walk off fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning to snap the Roos' eight game winning streak. In the afternoon game, Tech scattered nine hits and plated seven runs in a 7-2 victory against ACU.
Texas Tech 4, Kansas City 3
Zoe Jones' two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Texas Tech over Kansas City in the first game of the day.
The Roos struck first when a single to left field scored a runner from second base to give Kansas City a 2-0 lead over Tech in the third inning.
With two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the fifth, Karli Hamilton lifted her first home run of the year to left field to give Texas Tech the 3-1 lead. Jones and Maddie Westmoreland recorded back-to-back singles looking to add to the inning total, but a groundout ended the frame with the Red Raiders ahead by two.
Kansas City put the pressure on in the top of the sixth with a couple of singles that scored one run to cut the deficit in half. After a hit-by-pitch put runners on first and second, Sara Vonfeldt ripped a double to left field to tie the game and move runners to second and third with one out. The Red Raiders made a call to the bullpen and Kamryn Caldwell entered the game in relief of Missy Zoch. Caldwell retired the next two batters to get Tech out of the jam with the game tied at three all.
Heaven Burton drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh and stole second to get into scoring position for the Red Raiders. With two outs, Jones singled through the middle of the infield to drive in Burton, who slid into home safely for the walk off win.
Caldwell (1-1) picked up her first win of the season allowing one hit and striking out two batters in 1.2 innings of relief work. Zoch pitched 5.1 innings giving up three runs on four hits while striking out four batters.
Jones tallied her fourth multi-hit game of the season and Hamilton delivered her second multi-RBI game of the year.
Texas Tech 7, Abilene Christian 2
A couple of defensive miscues helped Texas Tech take a 2-0 lead early in the first inning of game two. Yvonne Whaley reached base on an error to open the game and was moved to third on a pair of ground outs. Jones blooped a double into right field to score Whaley and then came home on the next play after an error by the first baseman trying to field an infield pop fly from Westmoreland.
The Red Raiders added three runs in the third inning sparked by a leadoff inside-the-park home run from Burton. The Wildcat center fielder attempted a diving catch on the ball that hit in the gap and rolled to the fence allowing Burton to score standing up for the first inside-the-park home run of her career. Hamilton doubled to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch and Jones drew a walk to put two on for Westmoreland who singled through the left side of the field to score Hamilton. An errant throw by the left fielder brought one more runner across to increase the lead to 5-0.
Erin Edmoundson held the Wildcats scoreless until the sixth inning when ACU belted a two-run shot to center field to cut the lead to three.
Tech answered with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning off back-to-back triples from Payton Jackson and Arriana Villa and a groundout from Whaley that scored Villa.
Morgan Hornback entered the game in relief of Edmoundson in the seventh inning and closed the door with back-to-back strikeouts to give Texas Tech the 7-2 win.
Edmoundson (4-4) struck out a season-high eight batters while allowing just four hits and two runs over six innings of work.
