Talaba Qualifies for Volvo Car Open

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Texas Tech Lady Raider tennis alum Gabriela Talaba qualified for the 2021 Volvo Car Open this week, with the singles main draw starting on Monday.

Talaba went 2-0 in qualifying play to advance to the main draw. The former Lady Raider defeating Mexico's Fernanda Contreras Gomez in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on day one before holding off Xinyu Wang of China, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, to advance.

The Romanian native is set to face No. 91 Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in the round of 64 on Monday.

Talaba looks to keep rolling after advancing to the quarterfinals of the ITF/USTA $25,000 tournament in Boca Raton in February. Currently ranking No. 214 in the world, the made her Grand Slam debut in qualifying for the French Open last fall.
