Texas Tech To Face Virginia Tech in First Round of NCAA Tournament
May 07, 2021 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS, Georgia – The No. 25 Texas Tech men's tennis team begins its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in six years this Saturday at 9 a.m. (C.T.) when they take on No. 29 Virginia Tech in Athens, Georgia.
The matchup will mark Danny Whitehead's first NCAA Tournament appearance as head coach of the Red Raiders (12-7, 1-4). The Texas Tech men's tennis program is no stranger to competing in the national tournament having appeared in 13 of the last 16 NCAA Tournaments dating back to 2005.
This will be the first time the Red Raiders will take the court since losing in the first round of the Big 12 Conference Championship to No. 19 Oklahoma State, 3-4. Tech will look to recapture some of its mid-season magic that contributed to a nine-match win streak which featured regular season wins over fellow tournament teams New Mexico, Wichita State, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma.
The No. 29 Hokies (12-9, 6-6) come into the matchup having most recently lost to No. 6 North Carolina in the ACC Championship quarterfinals, 4-2.
The winner of Saturday's opening round matchup will advance to face the victor of host school Georgia and Eastern Tennessee State, with the regional champion advancing to the NCAA Round of 16. The full tournament bracket can be found here.
