Lady Raiders’ NCAA Run Ends in Round of 32
May 08, 2021 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Texas Tech women's tennis team's season came to a close on Saturday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center as the Lady Raiders fell to No. 4 UCLA, 4-0.
Â
After the Bruins took the doubles point with wins on courts one and three, the Lady Raiders battled hard at a number of spots but UCLA's deep singles lineup proved to be a tough matchup for Tech, winning on courts six, four and one, respectively to clinch the win and advance to the Sweet 16. The Lady Raiders were without Kaitlin Staines in singles, who played at the No. 3 spot in Friday's win over San Diego.
Â
While the match ended before Texas Tech could put a point on the board, Margarita Skriabina, Nell Miller and Metka Komac each took their first sets and were battling in the second as the match was suspended.
Â
Skriabina took the first set from No. 50 Jada Hart on court two, 6-4, while Miller picked up a 9-7 first-set tiebreaker and led, 2-0, in the second set as the match was clinched in favor of the Bruins. Komac won a big first-set tiebreaker too, defeating Abi Altick, 8-6, in the tiebreak.
Â
It was a season to remember for Tech, who finished the year with a 16-9 overall record and a 6-3 conference mark which was good for a third-place finish in the Big 12—outpacing the team's preseason poll projection. The Lady Raiders earned their first NCAA Tournament win since 2018 on Friday.
Â
One of the youngest teams in the nation, Texas Tech figures to return a bulk if not the entirety of its starting lineup next season. Because each returner got a year back after last spring's COVID stoppage, the current Lady Raider roster features six freshmen, two sophomores and a junior.
